Bicycle / Pedestrian Friendly Committee
Notes from September 22, 2015 meeting
ATTENDEES: Sunni Brown, Bill Garbett, Paul Wolff, Diane Schleicher, Bruce Saunders, John Bennett, George
Shaw, Haley Hill, Joe Wilson, and Chief Bob Bryson
Ms. Brown called the meeting to order. Mr. Wilson moved to approve the minutes from the last meeting. Mr.
Wolff seconded. The minutes were approved.
Old Business:
I. Discuss Better and Comprehensive signage for bicycle route and to direct bicycle traffic off of Jones
Avenue
Ms. Schleicher advised that Mr. Shaw and Mr. Wilson will review the NACTO Book for
recommendations and bring back to the committee
II. Discuss the possible benefits of bringing the pedestrian cross-walks up to the GDOT standards on
Tybrisa, the circle and the Strand and also on Butler Avenue at 17th Street
Ms. Schleicher advised there are eleven crosswalks without striping. She discussed the costs to
repaint
Mr. Wolff asked the benefits of buying the machine vs contracting the job
The committee discussed purchase vs contracting.
Ms. Schleicher suggested waiting for the new fiscal year to budget it out.
Mr. Wilson suggested that we may be eligible for LMIG.
The committee discussed the possibility of use of LMIG funds.
The committee set the goal to fund th is year if not next year.
The committee discussed the roads involved.
Mr. Wilson advised that he would bring the list of streets to the Infrastructure meeting.
III. Discuss the concept a future sidewalk system around Memorial Park the connects the sidewalks on
5th Street at Jones Avenue and one on 4th Street from Jones Avenue to Butler Avenue and also
to the YMCA and Memorial Park Playground and Restrooms
The committee discussed the long term sidewalk concept and plan.
The consensus of the committee was to not focus on perimeter sidewalks.
New Business:
I. Discuss the process of re-applying for Bicycle Friendly Status for Tybee Island
Ms. Shaw explained that he is researching the application and will report the next meeting.
Mr. Bennett stated that the rodeos, education, encouragement, strong showing in one of five requirements
or progress in all five would get us there. He stated that if we get to the next level, would be the first in
Georgia.
The committee discussed the frequency of the meeting to reach goals of Bicycle Friendly Status.
The committee will meet at 11:00am on the second Tuesday for October, November, skip December, and
then January.
Ms. Brown stated that the next meeting will be at 11am on October 13 in the Public Safety Building.
Mr. Wolff moved to adjourn the meeting. Mr. Bennett seconded.
The meeting was adjourned.
