HomeMy Public PortalAbout19491106CCMeeting246 Councilman Brown called attention to the shortage of fire plugs on the Island stating that the fire insurance rates had already been increased in Venetian Terrace caused by lack of fire plugs in that area. Mr. Solms reporting on his conference with Mr. Wm. F. Lynes, Jr. in connection with the opening of 6th Street was informed by Mr. Lynes that the Town condemn it, Mr. Solms also spoke to Mr. B. Taylor Smith who objected because it will increase traffic past the Tybee Terrace Cottages. Wilson Metts petitioned for permission to open a Package Shop on the S. E. corner of Jones Avenue and 1st Street. The matter was referred to the police Committee. It was the &pinion of Council to postpone the advertising of property for delinquent taxes. Councilman Meddin moved that the settlement submitted by the Insurance Adjusters covering hurricane damage amounting to be accepted, Councilman Peters seconded and the motion passed. There being no further business, Council adjourned, subject to the call of the Mayor. Clerk, of Council (f'&AJJ--ok-S Mayor Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Ga. November 6, 1949 The regular meeting of Town Council was held today at 4 p.M. and was attended by Mayor Dutton, who presided, Councilmen Peters, Hosti, Brown, Smith, Meddin, Town Attorney Solms, r'r. B. Taylor Smith, Mr. R. A. Goodman and Mr. Thomas Reed. Mr. Goodman protested against the issuing of a permit to E. J. Solomon for either an apartment or a commercial building on property adjacent to his. Mr. xoodman was excused. ?fir. Smith requested that something be done to correct the bad condition on the eastern side of Butler Avenue between 6th and, 7th Streets caused by rains which at times makes this section very dan- gerous. Mr. Smith was excused. The minutes of the meeting held on October 14,149 were read and adopted. Tr. Reed stated that Memorial park is over -run with cock - spurs, the children are gettin9full of them when they go out to play., that the sea -wall is finished except for approximately ten 247 feet and that he was waiting to hear from Mr. Hutton. The Mayor ask - ed if any asphalt was on hand as a section of the street had been cut where the drinking fountains are located next to the Public Rest Rooms and this should be repaired, he also noticed several openings in the rail along the board walk should be barricaded. Mr. Reed stated that the Town could repair the roofs on the several buildings damaged dur- ing the recent hurricane. Councilman Smith suggested that a space in the plat on Butler Avenue be opened to expedite the handling of traffic. The Mayor instructed Mr. Reed to check the area by the boy's rest room in the school and smoothe it off. Tie Mayor appointed a Committee consisting of Councilmen Meddin, Hosti and Smith to handle the changing of the doors at the Fire Station, the S. B. V. F. D. agreed to give the Town the two large doors from their building to be used at the Fire Station on Jones Avenue provided the Town replace the space in their building. It was decided that a composition shingle roof be replaced on the roof of the Fire Station and Jail. Councilman Smith Stated that the Fire Department wanted access to the telephone in the Jail and suggested that a small window could be opened in the partition to permit the Fire Department to use the telephone. Mr. Solms was requested to take the matter up with Mr. Reddy of the Telephone Company. Councilman meddin moved that bills for General Government for the month of November amounting to $2030.50 and also bills for the Groin and Seawall account amounting to 421.72 be paid. Council- man Smith seconded and the motion passed. Councilman Meddin Moved that $1500.00 be transferred from the General fund to the Groin and Sea -wall account, Councilman peters seconded and the motion passed. Councilman Meddin discussed finances and asked that the Chair- men of the various committees exercise the most strict economy. Councilman Brown stated that parts of an old building that was torn down next to Goldbergs quite some time ago has never been moved and aside from being unsightly it constitutes a fire hazard, he also stated there are now several other piles of trash laying around va- rious parts of the Island, and suggested that it would be a good idea to organize a clean -up committee composed of the ladies of the Island. The S. B. V. F. D. forwarded a number of tickets for their oys- ter roast to Council with the request that they be purchased. It was the opinion of Council that tax funds could not be used for this purpose, the Clerk was instructed to return the tickets advising them of this and also to .inform them that each member. of Council had pur- chased tickets individually. The matter of damages for parts of Lot 1, Ward 1 owned by Mrs. Marie B. Strong, in which the sea -wall is going thru a portion of, 248 was discussed, Councilman peters moved that the Town pay them not over $250.00 for the property, Councilman Hosti seconded and the motion passed. Councilman peters moved that 1949 taxes from May 1st charg- ed against parts of Lot 1, Ward 1 in the name of Marie B. Strong be cancelled, Councilman Hosti seconded and the motion passed. A letter was read from Dr. W. E. Barfield protesting against the assessment on his property, Lots 291, 292, Ward 4. The matter .__._ was referred to the Assessment Qo Committ_ee..._xri_th�..;,gwer to act. A letter was read from Dr. Robert Drane that alley 4 I be opened to the public. Referred to Chairman Hosti of the public Works Committee. The matter of placing several street lights on Campbell Street in Horsepen Hammock was again brought up. Councilman Peters moved that the following Resolution be adopt- ed, Councilman Meddin seconded and the motion passed. A RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Section Three (3) of the Public Law Number 528 of the 194E Acts of the State of Georgia requires that the registra- tion list of voters be opened by the Mayor and Councilmen in Sa- vannah, Georgia, during the last 15 days, Sundays, saturdays and legal holidays excepted, of a 45 day period which commences 90 days prior to the first Monday in March, Sundays, Saturdays and legal holidays excepted.; and, WHEREAS, Section Three (3) of the said Act further provides that the Mayor and Councilmen may designate some person or persons other than the Clerk of Council to keep said list open at the time and place; BE IT, THEREFORE, RESOLVED, that the registration list be opened in Savannah, Georgia, at the Clerks Office of the City Court of Savannah on December 8, 1949, and for a period of 15 days commencing with that date, Sundays, saturdays and legal holi- days excepted from said 15 day period. BE IT, FURTHER, RESOLVED, that Mose H. Portman, Clerk of the City Court of Savannah and/or his lawful deputies, be and they are hereby designated as the person and /or persons to keep said regis- tration list open.
