The Mission of the Tybee Island Development Authority / Main Street Program is to: - facilitate efforts to revitalize, redevelop, and enhance that which improves the quality of life; - create a sense of place and improve the quality of life for residents, business owners, and visitors using the Main Street Four Point Approach; - encourage quality economic growth and development while preserving Tybee Island's unique architectural and community heritage; - support and encourage the arts as a cultural endeavor and economic engine on the Island. ATTENDANCE (Present) Director: Bill Garbett, Vicki Hammons, Steve Kellam, Brenda Marion, Ted Lynch Ex-Officio Director: Melissa Memory Staff: Chantel Morton Invited Guest(s): Sarah Bernzott, Diane Kaufman, George Shaw, Melissa Turner (Absent) Director: Angela Caldwell, Deana Harden, Ex-Officio Director: John Yarbrough CALL TO ORDER Ted called the meeting to order at 6:04pm. WELCOME INVITED GUEST(S) Chantel introduced George Shaw, the City’s Planning, Zoning, and Economic Development Director and Diane Kaufman, Owner of Mermaid Cottages. DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY / MAIN STREET BOARD OF DIRECTORS MINUTES Motion was made by Brenda, which was seconded by Bill, to approve the minutes of the Tybee Island Development Authority / Main Street Board of Directors June 17, 2015 meeting. Motion carried. ORGANIZATION Local Advertising Assistance Plan Vicki will have information for the Board to review at the next meeting. Confirmation of Ex-Officio Board Members Motion was made by Steve, which was seconded by Brenda, to appoint Sarah Bernzott to represent the Tybee Arts Association and Melissa Turner to represent the Friends of Tybee Theater to the Development Authority / Main Street Board of Directors in the capacity of Ex-Officio Directors. Motion carried. BUSINESS ASSISTANCE COMMITTEE Locals Appreciation Card Chantel reported that as of August 19, nine residents have obtained new Locals Appreciation Cards and two residents have renewed their cards. Next Merchant Meetup Directors discussed options for the topic of the next Merchant Meetup. Upon discussing the challenges businesses had with hiring this past season, they agreed that the meeting will focus on employee TIDA/MS BOD approved: 10/21/15 Page 2 of 2 recruitment and retention. Ted confirmed the meeting will be November 10 from 9am until 10:30am. Chantel will check on the availability of the Guard House to use for the meeting. Melissa suggested that the Chamber/Visit Tybee be asked to assist with outreach. Business News Melissa reviewed the progress of the Tybee Post Theater and the grand opening for Saturday, September 26. She discussed the need for AV equipment and the process they are pursuing with City of Tybee Island Officials. Brenda and Ted will provide her with contact information for a gentleman they know that works on sound systems. Sarah reported on the upcoming Golden Flip Flop Reception and the Coastal Arts Fair the weekend of September 25. DESIGN COMMITTEE Next Committee Meeting: Public Mural Project N/A PROMOTIONS COMMITTEE Tybee Community Day: September 27, 1pm – 5pm Directors discussed the final plans for Community Day. Chantel reported that Monty has lined up three bands to play throughout the day, nineteen organizations will be represented, the YMCA will have games and Jim, Ted, and Brenda are handling the food that John is donating. Kathryn will be bringing the cake to the Pavilion that morning. Everyone agreed to continue spreading the word. Tybee for the Holidays: November 26 – January 1 Brenda reported that plans for the holiday season are coming along. Chantel has sent out the information for participation to the businesses. She will update the holiday website, tybeefortheholidays.com, the week of October 5 with the information that is received. Chantel reported that she met with the City Manager, Joe, Danny, and Wanda regarding the Christmas Tree Wanda is working on securing. Wanda received tree vendor information from Joe and she will send an update once she has more information regarding the size so Public Works can secure it at the roundabout prior to Decorating Day on November 28. Chantel and Brenda will order more ornaments for the tree as necessary. OTHER BUSINESS Diane shared information about the November Tybee Salutes Heroes event. Brenda announced that the Tybee Island Maritime Academy will be the recipient of proceeds from Tybee Idol, which will be at Huc-a-Poos on September 20 and the Tybee Island Spelling Bee on October 1. Brenda inquired about Deana’s attendance at the Board meetings because Diane is interested in serving as a Director. Directors discussed the process of a board member resigning, advertising an open position for the Mayor and City Council to appoint a voting director. Chantel will reach out to Deana and proceed as appropriate. ADJOURN The meeting adjourned at 6:52pm.
