HomeMy Public PortalAbout19500118SCMeeting1 to install signs designating the speed limits, school zones and speed limits within school zones; BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED by the Mayor and Councilmen of Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, that the Highway Department of the State of Georgia be requested to furnish to the Town of Savannah Beach for installation along Highway 80, a part of the State Highway System, the following signs in the amounts designated; (a) Thirty (30) Stop Signs; (b) Four (4) school Zone Signs; (c) Four (4) School Speed Limit Signs; (d) Twelve (12) Speed Limit signs, designating said speed as Thirty (30) Miles per Hour; (e) Eight (8) Speed Limit Signs, designating the speed limit as Fifteen (15) Miles per Hour. Mr. Reed was instructed to put up the signs as soon as re- ceived. There being no further business, Council adjourned, subject to the call of the Mayor. Cl 1'k of Council 257 Mayor Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Ga. January 18, 1950 A special meeting of Town Council wqs held today at 6 P.M. and was attended by Mayor Dutton, who presided, Councilmen Hosti, Brown, Smith, Supt. Reed, Edmund J. Solomon and police Chief Stewart. The meeting was called for the following purposes: 1- Authorizing the immediate action in the abatement of existing fire hazards located at 1010 First Avenue, on Lots 13 -A or 13 -B, Ward 3, the property of Herbert F. and Fannie G. Goring. 2- The condemnation of said premises known as 1010 let Avenue, on Lots 13 -A or 13 -B, Ward 3, the property of Herbert F. and Fannie G. Goring. The Mayor informed Council that the building on Lot 13 -, 258 Ward 3, owned by Herbert F. and Fannie G. Goring was a. fire haz- ard, a health menance and was dangerous to the Community, as old papers, old wood and junk of all description was piled up around the place, after some discussion Councilman Hosti moved that the place be cleaned out and underbrushed and that the owners be billed for the cost, and that the foll6wtng Resolution be adopt- ed, Councilman Smith seconded and the motion passed. A RESOLUTION WHEREAS, R. A. Stewart, the Chief of Police of Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, and Edmund J. Solomon, the Chief of the Savannah Beach Volunteer Fire Department, have reported to the Mayor and Councilmen that there exists certain fire hazards at 1010 First Avenue, Savannah Beach, Tybee Island; and WHEREAS, the above described property is of frame con - struction, old, deteriorated and is located adjacent to the property of other citizens of this Town of more recent and val- uable construction, and the said described premises is detrimental to the safety of property in that portion of the municipality; and WHEREAS, Section 36 of the Georgia Laws of 1922 and the other laws of the State of Georgia ammendatory thereof provide that the Mayor and Councilmen of Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, shall have the power t� prevent injury or annoyance to the public or individuals from anything dangerous, offensive or unwholesome; to make regulations for guarding against danger or damage by fire; to protect the property of the citizens of the Town, and to pre- serve peace and good order therein; and, WHEREAS, the said Herbert F. Goring and Fannie G. Goring, . owners of the above mentioned premises, cannot be located with- in the corporate limits of the said Town nor in Chatham County, Georgia; BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED by the Mayor and Councilmen of Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, in Council assembled at a called special meeting that the Superintendent of the Department of Public Works be instructed and he is hereby instructed to remove . without damage to the property all rubbish, papers, card board boxes, rags, palmetto branches or other inflamables which have no value and may of their nature be fire hazards, and they are further ordered and directed upon the completion of same to leave the property properly secured from entry of persons having no right to enter the same. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that an execution be issued against said property to cover the cost of removing and/or cleaning up said fire hazard. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town Attorney be and he is hereby instructed to bring condemnation proceedings imme- diately according to law to condemn the said described premises. 259 There being no further business, Council adjourned, sub- ject to the call of the Mayor. 1 Mayor Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Ga. February 16, 1950 The regular meeting of Town Council was held today at 4 P.M. and was attended by Mayor Dutton, who presided, Councilmen Hosti, Brown, gmit},Meddin, Lovell, Town Attorney Solms and Mitchell Young, A. P. Solomon, Jr., J. W. Lang, Tommy Reed, T. S. Chu and B. Taylor Smith. Mr. young in discussing the Zoning Ordinance as regards Area A, stated that it was the intent of the ordinance to allow commercial buildings on Butler Ave. and his interpretation of the ordinance permitted this, Mr. Solomon stated that he proposed to operate a retail store selling paints, hardware and etc., no appliances. They were excused. Mr. Reed reported that it was now 18 prisoners at the camp, that the work on the Firemans Club Building was finished except to paint it, but that the doors had not been placed on the fire station as yet. Councilman Brown stated that the groins along the bathing area south of the pavillion were eaten out and were dangerous, he suggested that to assist nature in building up the beach at a point extending in a southerly direction from 18th St., that a groin be extended in this direction from the sea -wall, for at the present time sand was being moved away from the beach in this sec- tion by the action of the sea, the Mayor appointed Councilman Brown, Supt. Reed and Town Attorney Solms as a committee to inves- tigate the matter and also to contact the U. S. Engineers. Councilman Smith stated that he had handled the matter of the Sou. Bell Tel. & Tel. Co. operating the siren, but'that -this could not be done. Councilman Lovell called attention to the deterioated con- dition of the groins at Tilton and lst Streets, Mr. Reed stated that he had reported the matter to Mr. J. J. Hutton, who stated that he had checked with the Creosoting Co. and they would not accept responsibility, the matter was referred to Mr. Solms to handle with Thomas & Hutton.
