HomeMy Public PortalAboutOrganization and Leadership.docORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP IMMEDIATE STEPS - July 1 - December 31, 2006 In order to implement the Strategic Cultural Plan for Tybee Island, it is vital for the Fine Arts Commission to determine who will lead the effort and how the plan will be implemented and funded. These are essential first steps. Attend the Implementation meeting on Thursday, June 22, 2006 with the City and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs Quality Growth Team to encourage the development of arts venues and arts related facilities recommended in the Quality Growth Plan. Present the Strategic Cultural Plan to the City Council asking for endorsement. Meet with the cultural community (MOMS plus others) and present the City-approved plan, asking for endorsement and involvement. Request of the City a small operating budget to design and print Fine Arts Commission letterhead, basic office supplies and postage. Involve the community in implementing the plan - Identify 3-5 volunteer leaders to serve on one of six Task Forces to accomplish the following short-range steps: Task Force A - Bring together the cultural community through the conduit of the Meeting of the Minds Group. Clearly identify the MOMS leadership, establish and publish a bi-monthly schedule of meetings, and develop the calendar of cultural and related events for the entire year. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal #2) Task Force B - Organize a specific Tybee Arts Marketing Committee to create a dynamic brochure which emphasizes Tybee's cultural events, organizations, galleries, artists, distinctive restaurants and the Turtle Tour. Gather information about upcoming cultural events and relay on a regular basis to the Tourism Office for inclusion on its web site and transmission to the media and special publications such as the Department of Cultural Affairs Savannah Quarterly. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal # 5) Task Force C - Determine a method to conduct a survey that will lead to the creation of an inventory and database of artistic, creative resources on Tybee Island. Incorporate the Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs and SCAD databases of artists, arts instructors, performers, writers, et al. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal # 4) Task Force D - Organize a quarterly "round table" meeting of parents, art teachers, TAA/TAPS, YMCA, Historical Society, Library, Marine Science Center to discuss joint ventures, plan year-round activities, share calendars, generate ideas and programs, and determine responsibilities, venues and funding. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal # 4) NEXT STEP: PLANNING - January 1 - July 1, 2007 Task Force E - In collaboration with the Task Forces and the committees and leadership they generate, select from the following list of suggested Very Important Projects (VIP) and build a time-line and budget for their development. Marsh and Coastal Wildlife Festival - a three day annual eco-cultural celebration of the wildlife, flora and fauna in the waters, land and air around Tybee and Little Tybee with invitational exhibits of relevant wildlife art and sculpture, cuisine, and theme-related activities. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal # 1) Flip Flops and Duels outdoor- style annual production celebrating Tybee's legends, music and history, based on stories and tales of Tybee gathered by local historians and using local professional and amateur talent. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal # 2) Bar Crawls - Literary - Progressive tour led by a contracted actor/storyteller, with stops at six Tybee bars where stories are told about interesting local history or characters associated with the bar or neighborhood. Music - Tour of six Tybee bars where music happens regularly, led by a local musician/personality who can tell fun and interesting facts about the band, the bar and the music. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal # 1) Music in the Marsh - A musical series of classical and semi-classical chamber ensembles, presented in small venues, particularly the churches of Tybee. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal # 3) Island Literary Fest - Featuring Georgia authors in a multitude of venues, reading and selling their works and offering various workshops. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal # 3) Big Band Concerts - Recreate historic concerts at the Pier and Pavilion. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal #3) Gateways and Parks - Create a beach and marshlands atmosphere at the entrance to the Island and in City Parks. Commission artists, designers and landscapers, or work with SCAD faculty and students to create playground equipment, sculpture, and topiaries reflecting sea and marsh creatures and themes. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal # 4) Family Focused Events Imagination Celebration - A New Year's Eve non-alcoholic event preceding the annual Midnight Fireworks on the Beach, featuring puppeteers, mimes, storytellers, musicians, theater, strolling performers, clowns, jugglers, et al in a multitude of indoor and outside venues around town. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal # 1) Island Scavenger Hunt - From a central location, get a printed map with clues to a dozen unique, quirky and historic features such as the private home with its corner post of flip flops, a motel with a Harley Davidson motorcycle in the bedroom, a purple house, a raised cottage, a horse from an antique carousel, a turtle wearing clothes, etc. (Strategic Cultural Plan Goal # 1) This is one example of a family event recommended to run simultaneously with such revelry events as Pirate Fest and Beach Bum Parade. NOTE: These VIP projects are recommended because they fulfill the needs identified in the cultural planning process. There are additional programming ideas in the Strategic Cultural Plan. LONG RANGE: The Fine Arts Commission should regularly bring together the Task Forces, and the committees and groups resulting from their work, to study each of the Goals in the Strategic Cultural Plan. A system for implementation, including timelines, partners and budgets should be developed for each recommendation. The Fine Arts Commission will develop the Island Volunteers for the Arts (IVA) comprised of a broad representation of Tybee residents to serve as an active volunteer base to assist the Commission in implementation and fundraising.
