She explained the format of the evening and that the goals are to gather information in order to consider suggestions that could mitigate / eliminate litter. The provided suggestions will help determine the next steps. Those involved with the planning of the workshop were thanked, as well as those in attendance. TOPIC VERBAL PRESENTATION NOTES THAT COINCIDE WITH WRITTEN NOTES  Plastic lids & cups - revise the current city ordinance that references plastic cups to reference biodegradable / paper, in order to minimize damage; - make to go cups recyclable - incentivize people to bring their own cups - only provide a lid if customer asks for one - provide solid, nice reusable cups that businesses / city can use as promotional pieces - sustainability / clean environment = good for business - communicate with the public through better signage and clear, simple signage (i.e. Cans/Plastic)  Cans & plastic bottles - change behavior to solve the problem with beach and street litter - CRC & TBA doing a great job - create a group out of this litter workshop w/ a chairperson to take action and get results - get away from single use items by using the Visit Tybee logo or a sponsor for single use items (i.e. bags, bottles, etc.) - do something to thank DPW for their good work  Containers - keep the message simple - provide more and larger recycling bins with more info to explain what litter and trash does to the environment - clean up the beach by having offenders do community service and provide the same for students - ask restaurant / convenience store owners to use biodegradable cups and containers  SUPB & snack wrappers - snack wrappers cannot be recycled; there is a company that will recycle juice boxes - education is important for proper disposal = volunteers - have the judge order that offenders do community service hours to clean the beach - design biodegradable packaging - cut down on use by buying in bulk - don’t use SUPB, have stores provide reusable bags; - recycle – reuse – educate - incentivize for people to bring their own bag  Straws & cigarettes - cost issues ($0.20/paper straws vs. $0.01/plastic straws) - have better signage that includes pictures - make paper straws mandatory & pass cost to consumer - don’t automatically give straws unless customer asks for one - educate and provide better signage to recycle straws - the Tybee Pavilion should be a smoke free environment according to the Health Dept. - do an educational program about harm to marine life through PSAs - provide education re: addictions - bring back “leave only your footprints” with a concerted effort financially supported - provide beach ashtrays / a campaign to “field strip” your butts   TOPIC (con’t.) Fishing litter (lines, hooks, bait containers) - provide a receptacle for fishing trash - bait containers that are biodegradable - increase public awareness through education and working together - reward good deeds with financial awards; create teams for sections on the beach - trash ambassadors   EDUCATION BETTER SIGNAGE INCREASE AWARENESS Becky thanked everyone for their participation, conduct and suggestions. She confirmed the information will be reviewed for common themes and compiled. A report will be provided at another workshop prior to Thanksgiving in order to determine the next steps.
