A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD
SUPPORTING SB 1087 TO REAUTHORIZE THE SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL
CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM FOR AN ADDITONAL THREE YEARS
WHEREAS, the Safe Routes to School program is funded by the federal highway
program and in no way impacts the state budget. This program, enabled by AB 1475 of 1999,
began in California in 2000 to fund small construction projects that protect children
walking or biking to and from school. Most of the construction projects were built around
elementary schools;
WHEREAS, due to the need of Safe Routes to Schools by hundreds of school
sites, it is necessary to extend the Safe Routes to School Program for an additional three
years;
WHEREAS, the City of Lynwood was a recipient of a Safe Routes to School Grant
which provided for some construction project around schools in Lynwood that is now protecting
children from traffic related casualties. The schools involved were: Lincoln, Lindbergh, Wilson,
Agnes, Washington, Mark Twain, Roosevelt, Lugo, Will Rogers and Abbott Elementary
Schools; Hosler and Lynwood Middle Schools;
WHEREAS, the cost of the total above project was $ 333,333 and the Safe Routes to
School Funding awarded was $ 300,000.for 2000-2001;
WHEREAS, ifSB 1987 is enacted, cities can continue to receive grants to protect
children walking and biking to and from school;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Lynwood
as follows:
Section 1. That the City Council hereby supports SB 1087, Safe Routes to School
Section 2. That the City Council directs the City Manager or her designee to send
a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee in Sacramento to support SB 1087 reauthorizing
the Safe Routes to School Construction program for an additional three years.
Section 3. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
