Dear Mayor, You are invited to participate in the 2022 Mayor's Walking Challenge, a program of the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health. The Mayor's Walking Challenge gives you an opportunity to earn funds for your city while doing something that's good for your health — walking. This is the ninth year that we have offered the Mayor's Walking Challenge, and it has allowed us to invest more than $400,000 into Idaho communities. Participation has grown each year, and we're hoping that trend continues this year. The Mayor's Walking Challenge is a great way to be an active role model for kids, learn what it's like to walk in your community, and earn funds for your city. Here's what you need to know: • The Mayor's Walking Challenge takes place during October. The goal is to walk at least 5,000 steps per day to earn $500 for your community. Mayors who average 10,000 steps per day in October will earn $1,000. Most people take between 3,000 and 4,000 steps per day, so those big numbers shouldn't be too intimidating. Last year, we had 81 mayors complete the challenge. You can do this! • We encourage mayors to walk with children at a local school. Past participants enjoyed taking the time to walk with kids at school and talking with them about the importance of being physically active. Mayors who do this will get 10,000 bonus steps added to their step total. All you need to do is send us a photo of you walking with kids at school. • The funds you earn can be used for any project or program that encourages and promotes the importance of physical activity. Some examples of how past Mayor's Walking Challenge champions have used the funds are park improvements, donating to a local school to purchase physical education equipment, sponsoring a fun run, repainting crosswalks, purchasing playground equipment and maintenance, and more. • Steps are counted using any activity tracker, smartphone or smartwatch. Easy instructions to get set up on our platform will be sent to you upon registration. • Sign up for the Mayor's Walking Challenge by visiting our registration page today at: www.bcidahofoundation.org/mayors-walking-challenge/register. The deadline to register is Tuesday, September 28. If you have any questions, please email us at info@bcidahofoundation.org. We hope you will join us for the 2022 Mayor's Walking Challenge!
