June 18, 1952 The regular meeting of Town Council was held today at 8 PM and was attended by Acting -mayor Meddin, who presided, Councilmen Coleman, Strong, Lovell` &J. J. Hutton-, H. H. D. Grove, Thomas Reed, J. W. Lang, Chief McCutchen and Charlie Holm. Bids were opened for the sale of the 100,000 gallon Elevated Tank, located at Ft. Screven as follows: The bid of the Whitmire Tank Company being the highest received it was moved, seconded and passed that the tank be sold to them. Charlie Holm informed Council that there were only two Life Guards employed by the Town, that he needs more help, he needs extra Life Guards on holidays and Sundays, also that the conditions should be improved, he also requested that the old ambulance be turned over to the Life Guards for use in connection with their work. Mr. Lang reported that the sale of meters was $1557.00 and that collections for water rent amounted to $15,000.00 to date. Chief McCutchen requested more men for the police Depart- ment, he employed one man last Sunday who gave out 69 citations that day, he stated that the parking meters are not holding up, he also asked that Officer J. N. Durden be appointed Lieutenant of police. It was decided to hold off on this until the return of the Mayor. He also reported that he had gone to Chattanooga, Tennessee and brought a prisoner back. He reported that there are about 80 break -downs of the parking meters each day and suggested that Council order 80 IlParko Meters!' from another concern. The Chief also asked for an awning for the 16th Street Police Station, he was instructed to get an estimate and turn it over to the Chairman of the Finance Committee. Supt. Reed informed Council that work had been started on the side walk on Butler Avenue from Izlar to 18th Street, and asked Council if a curb was wanted on it, the Sewerage System was working alright at the present time, Mr. G. W. Millikan had planted a number of small pines on 14th Street and also Jones Avenue without permission, the Council Instructed the Clerk to notify Mr. Millikan to remove the obstructions, Supt. Reed also stated that signs were being erected over a number of places without permission. Councilman Meddin moved that bills for the month of May 148 for General Government amounting to $1275.23 be paid, and for the Water Department, Revenue, $1,093.06 and for Construc- tion account $750.00. The Motion was seconded and passed. Charles Christy applied far permission to erect a sign . at his place, 16th & Strand. Referred to Councilman Coleman. Mr. John Brannen, Attorney fro Mr. E. D. Hood, filed a claim for damages to the property at 2nd Avenue and llth Street claiming that a Town employee had turned on the water when the building was empty. Hold for nest meeting. Councilman Lovell discussed the water rates and the num- ber of fixtures to be charged to water takers, it was decided to extend the matter until the next meeting.
