July 1b, 1952 The regular meeting of Town Council was held today at S pM and was attended by Acting -Mayor Meddin, who presided, Councilmen Peters, Hosti, Coleman, Strong and Lovell, Chief McCutchen, Supt. Reed, and Mr. J. W. Lang. Mr. Lang reported that there were 828 water takers includ- ing meter users, he also stated that the Seaview Aptis. were charg- ed $95.00 for water rent and it should have been 155.50, they are due a refund of $9.50, also the Nic Nac Stand on loth Street was charged $27.00 for water rent and this stand is on the meter own- ed by T. B. Mc Carroll, the x$27.00 should be refunded. Tt was r Moved, seconded and passed that these refunds be made. Councilman Lovell asked the status of M. B. Clarks water line to his new house on 2nd Avenue. Mr. Reed said he would get to it as soon as he could. Mr. Reed informed Council that Mr. Hamilton Long of the State Highway Dept. and Mr. J. A. Logan of the County Engineers are making a survey of the automobile; road and wanted to know if ■ sea water had ever gone over the road and he informed them that it had, they also wanted to know if concrete side wqlks were put on Butlwe Avenue where would they be placed. The weeds in Venetian Terrace had been cut and in doing so the residents in the area nave complained that rats have come into their houses. The Clerk was instructed to write the U. S. P.H. S. to ascertain if they would send some rat exterminating crews to the Island in an effort to minimize the rat situation. Chief McCutchen called attention to the parking meters, stating they are giving lots of trouble, the Dual Co. sent repre- sentatives who think that the fault is the Town's, Mr. Shaw of MIA, Dual Co'.. came down and checked the meters, he will recommend gseWding some one with authority from_the'Dual Co. so they can straighten the matter out, the meters are rusting and coroding, the Chief stated he had written some letters to the Dual Co and in some instances had received no answers, recently 139 calls had been made due to people putting money in the meters and they fail- ing to work, he recommended that the park9ifg meters be taken out. It was moved, seconded and passed that the matter be referred to the police Committee with power to act. Chief McCutchen stated B. Karp had complained about parking meters placed in front of his property, on 17th Street and he did not want to have to go thru his fence. The ,'7Chiefi stated that sometime there are three or four cars that belong to one house, Chief McCutchen also asked why Herman Diamond doesn't have parking meters in front of his place of business, The Red Barn, he also atat'eet.that the exhaust fan at :the jail needs repairing, also that on July 4th one of the volunteer Life Guards got hurt and had to be placed under a Doctors care, the bill amounted to $15.00. It was moved, seconded and passed that the bill be paid. Councilman Lovell stated that William A. Clark protest- ed against the amount of his 1952 water bill of $60.00, he claims that he never paid more than $40.50 for previous years and requested that the charge be reduced to $40.50, Councilman Lovell stated that Mr. Clark has two houses for which he should pay $30.00 each. It was moved, seconded and passed that if he paid the full amount of 00.00 now, he would be allowed the 1O% discount. The matter of the insurance carried by the Town.on the Water Works System was referred to the Water Committee. Councilman Lovell called attention to the excessive use of water on the Island. It was moved, seconded and passed that Officer Jinks N. Durden be made Lieutenant of police effective July 16, 1952, and his salary be increased $10.00 per month. It was moved, seconded and passed that an awning be purchased for use at the police Station on 16th & strand to cost not over ;120.00. Hills for the month of June for General Government amounting to $5012.50 and also bills for the Water Department, Revenue Account for $2474.96 were presented. It was moved, seconded and passed that they be paid. It was moved, seconded and passed that the discount be allowed for 1952 taxes of A. F. Solms, sr.
