HomeMy Public PortalAbout008-2012 - supporting US Bicycle Route 50COMMON COUNCIL CITY OF RICHMOND, INDIANA RESOLUTION 8 -2012 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE UNITED STATES BICYCLE ROUTE 50 WHEREAS, Bicycle tourism is a growing industry in North America, contributing $47 billion a year to the economics of communities that provide facilities for such tourists; and WHEREAS, The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials ( AASHTO) has designated a corridor crossing Indiana to be developed as United States Bike Route 50 (USBR 50); and WHEREAS, The Society for the Preservation and Use of Resources (SPUR) and the Adventure Cycling Association, with the cooperation of the Indiana Department of Transportation and other stakeholders, have proposed a specific route to be designated as United States Bicycle Route ( "USBR ") 50, a map of which is herein incorporated into this resolution by reference; and WHEREAS, The proposed route for USBR 50 comes through Richmond, Wayne County and can therefore provide a benefit to our residents and businesses; and WHEREAS, Common Council has investigated the proposed route and found it to be a suitable route, and desire that the route be designated so that it can be mapped and signed, thereby promoting bicycle tourism in Richmond; and WHEREAS, The City of. Richmond Comprehensive Plan Goal TR4 calls for "The identification of specific routes for types of traffic ranging from truck and hazardous materials transport routes to bicycle routes "; and WHEREAS, The City of Richmond Transportation Plan encourages the promotion of alternative transportation methods and designates Hodgin Road/South L Street as a bicycle lane; and WHEREAS, No further infrastructure work would be required to establish US Bicycle Route 50 in Richmond (See Attached Map). NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY The Common Council of the City of Richmond, that the City of Richmond hereby expresses its approval and support for the development of USBR 50, and requests that the appropriate officials see to it that the route is officially designated by AASHTO as soon as this can be achieved, and authorizes the posting of signs within the City of Richmond right -of -way identifying the route through the community once the official designation has been made.
