OFFICE OF THE VILLAGE MANAGER
NO. 132-2015 LETTER TO COUNCIL
TO: Mayor Martin Packer and Members of the Village Council
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, Village Manager
DATE: July 31, 2015
SUBJECT: Police Department — Calls for Service Analysis
This Letter to Council (LTC) is to inform you that during the June 8, 2015 Budget Advisory
Committee meeting, the committee requested information pertaining to the number of
police related incidents which occurred at the Bal Harbour Shops. Therefore, I requested
that Chief Overton conduct an analysis of all calls for service as they relate to the resources
directed towards providing police service to Bal Harbour Village and particularly how these
calls for service relate to the Bal Harbour Shops.
For the calendar year 2014, the Bal Harbour Village Police Department handled a total of
4,812 calls for service. Total calls for service are defined as any call requiring the response
of a police officer. Some examples include alarms, accidents, suspicious persons and or
vehicles, and criminal offenses (in other words any time an officer is required to address
something whether criminal or non -criminal). Of those calls, 24 percent (1,133) were
directly related to the Bal Harbour Shops.
Further breakdown of the calls for service indicate that of the 4,812 total calls for service
handled by the Bal Harbour Police Department, 303 were for criminal incidents that
occurred within Bal Harbour Village's Jurisdiction. Of those 303 incidents, 30 percent (92)
are directly connected to or occurred at the Bal Harbour Shops. 2014 data was used as
the sample year because it is the only full year of reliable data available.
It is important to note that one year is a snap shot of activity and should not be considered
a trend. The police department does not have an automated computer aided dispatch or
records management system, making the retrieval and analyzation of data difficult and
time consuming.
Attached are charts summarizing this information.
Should you have any questions or require additional information, please feel free to call
the Chief or me directly.
