HomeMy Public PortalAbout19540811CCMeeting35 Savannah Beach,Ga. August 11, 1954 The regular meeting of Town Council was held today at 8 P. M. in the Council Room and was attended by Mayor Strong, who presided, Councilmen Brown, Powers, Lovell, Meddin, Hosti, Town Attorney Solms, Supt. Reed, Chief McCutchen, Mr. John C. Howard and. Mr. B. Taylor Smith. The minutes of the meeting of July 14th were read and adopted. Mr. Smith presented a plat of a proposed subdivision located on the north side of the old Central Railway Right of Way and bounded by McKenzie Avenue, Estill Avenue and Polk St., consisting of twenty -one (21) lots, he stated that there is a low area in this proposed subdivision in the vicinity of Polk Street, Storer Street and Estill Avenue and requested that the Town close Storer and also requested that twenty -five (251) feet of the old Central Right of Way be conveyed to them. Councilmen Lovell and Meddin informed Mr. Smith that when the Town wanted to extend a portion of 6th Street westward he held up the work and finally the Town was forced to pay the Tybee Beach Company $1,000.00 so that the Street could be opened. It was moved, seconded and passed that that portion of the old Cen- tral Right of Way adjacent to the subdivision from McKenzie Ave. to Polk Street be conveyed to the Tybee Beach Company upon the submission of a plat covering said subdivision. Mr. Smith also petitioned to have the Town extend it's water supply to Holiday Park Subdivision south of the old Cen- tral Right of Way and being out of the oorporate limits of the Town, he proposed that the Tybee Beach Company will pay for the pipe and etc., that the Town forces lay the mains that the Tybee Beach Company be rebated for their costs on a basis of as houses are built the Tybee Beach Company would be refunded accordingly. Mr. Smith was excused. Councilman Meddin asked if the Town should accept the offer. It was decided to refer the matter to the Water Committee to get an estimate as to costs and report back at the next meeting of Council. Mr. Howard petitioned against paying a water charge of $60.00 for two (2) houses owned by him on the same lot on Gulick Street in Ft. Sureven. Mr. Howard was. excused. It was moved, seconded and passed that the charge be reduced to $37.50 as for a duplex. Chief McCutchen wanted authority to order winter uniforms for the Police Department now, he also stated that the Savannah Beach Volunteer Fire Department wanted to sell a metal tag with the name Savannah Beach on it to be attached to the license plate of automobiles, he also stated that the Fire Departiment was dis- posing of the Chevrolet Ambulance that they have, as it is not 36 suitable and are repairing the old Buick Ambulance, he also wanted to have the mattresses in the jail renovated. He was instructed to get the costs and refer the matters to the Police Committee. Mr. J. H. Johnson protested against the noise caused by the dogs in the neighborhood, Jones Avenue, between 13th and 14th Streets. Referred to the Police Department. Councilman Lovell called attention to a tip being off the seawall in the area of Tilton to lst Street, he also stated that the groin from Tilton to 3rd Street is in a bad state of repair. It was moved, seconded and passed that bills for the month of July for General Government amounting to $2,647.95, for the Water Department, $1,313.37 be paid. . Councilman Powers stated that one of the sirens at the Fire Station on Jones Avenue should be located at the South End of the Island, he was requested to investigate the matter and report back. Councilman Hosti called attention to the meeting to be held in the Savannah Chamber of Commerce Building at 10 A. M. on September 10th in connection with the proposed new road to Tybee, he also stated that the Town needs a drag line, he was requested to get some information about this. Councilman Lovell stated that quite a number of persons are fishing off of the baord walks in the parking areas, this is dangerous and should be stopped. It was decided that the Police and the Life Guards be instructed to stop this practice. The question of the condemnation of the building of Mike Goldberg, and which he had been notified to tear down, that no action be taken until the next meeting. Mrs. J. F. Wilson, for the Estate of J. F. Wilson, petioned that the 1952, 1953 and 1954 license fees assessed against the property, Parts of sections 4 & 5 of Lot 102, Ward 5, be cancelled. She produced affidavits to show that the prop- erty is owned by several members of the family and wets not op- erated as an apartment building where the ordinance requires a fee for operation of three 3) or more apartments. It was moved, seconded and passed that the charges be cancelled. A letter was received from the Savannah Beach Optimist Club requesting Council to give consideration to a Municipa]. Pier as part of it's recreational facilities for visitors com- ing to the Island. The Clerk was instructed to write the Opti- mist Club that consideration was being given to the matter. It was moved, seconded and passed that a refund of $60.00 be made to Chief McCutchen due to a duplicate payment in the name of Walter Barksdale made to the Town Treasurer.
