Tybee Island
LED Roadway Project
Fact Sheet
Project Start Date: Late July/Early August 2016
Estimated Completion: One month
Number of Fixtures: 180 fixtures
Roadways across the state are becoming better illuminated thanks to a multi-year
Georgia Power partnership with local governments. The company, which owns and
maintains approximately 400,000 roadway lights for local governments, is in the process
of converting thousands of high-pressure sodium (HPS) roadway lights to new energy
efficient LEDs. Governmental customers have a high interest in LED lighting technology
and its benefits, but most lack the capital resources to proactively convert to LED. The
Georgia Power LED Roadway Lighting Initiative makes LED lighting available at no capital
cost to cities and municipalities and is being offered upon request.
The effects of the program are already visible as the company has completed the
conversion of more than 100,000 LED roadway lights in Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus,
Conyers, Savannah, Valdosta and elsewhere.
If all 400,000 potential roadway lights are converted, the process could take up to four
years to complete. The lighting project is managed by Georgia Power Lighting Services,
which specializes in commercial, industrial and residential outdoor lighting, including
high-efficiency LEDs.
LED roadway lights offer multiple benefits over traditional HPS lights, including:
Safety: LEDs provide a broad spectrum of white light, meaning human eyes can
better see street signs, bicyclists and pedestrians.
Quality: LED light is directed to stay more on roadways where needed,
eliminates upward light and is spread more evenly without “hot spots” and dark
areas.
Efficiency: LEDs use less energy to produce the same amount of lumen output
and deliver a significantly longer lifespan.
