M. in the Council Room and was attended by Mayor Strong, who presided, Councilmen Peters, Brown, Powers, Lovell, Hosti, Town Attorney Solms, Superintendent Reed, Manager Lang, Mrs. K. A. Huggins and Mr. 0. J. Mullinix. Mr. Mullinix requested that the licenses for the M. V. machines be collected from the location at which the machine is placed, to expidite the collection. He was excused. Mrs. Huggins as Chairman of the Health and Safety Comm. mittee of the Salk Vaccine Fund, requested a donation so that children can be given free shots that are unable to pay for them. Mrs. Huggins was excused. It was moved, seconded and passed that the Town donate($100.04) one hundred dollars. Mr. Lang informed Council that as the water meter at the Cutten Variety Center is the property of the City of Savannah, he had informed Mr. Mater' that he would have to put in his own meter, Mr. Outten stated that the owner of the property should install the meter, Mr. Lang asked what he should do, it was de- cided to wait until Mr. Meddin returns so tbatthe matter can be straightened out. Councilman Hosti asked if the Town is to run the water line down the easement on the Dyer Subdivision, Mr. Lang stated, that he did not know where the easement is located, it was decid- ed to refer the matter to the Chairman of the Water Committee and Town Attorney Solms. The minutes of the meeting of April 13, 1955 were read and adopted. It was moved, seconded and passed that bills for General Government for the month of March amounting to $6,693.69, and for the Water Department amounting to $375.92, be paid. Councilman Powers called attention to the several licenses at the Beach Drug Company and stated that the 1955 licenses had been adjusted, that they would pay $170.00. Councilman Brown stated that in connection with street lights he had contacted the Savannah Electric Company and they had agreed to send an Engineer down to check the matter and that any old street lights that needed to be replaced would be. It was moved, seconded and passed that the license of $3550.00 be made for a game known as Hollywood Amusement Game (Ben Forgasch) and that no loud speakers on the outside would be permitted. 58 Council decided that the places of business selling whiskey and beer would be prohibited from selling on Sunday effective Im- mediately, Councilman Brown was to confer with F. E. Estill and Julian J. Kelly, members of the Grand Jury. It was moved, seconded and passed that tires for use on the trucks be purchased at a cost not exceeding $500.00. Council- man Hosti will handle the matter. Mayor Strong ordered that all M. V. machine licenses be aid by May 16th and all other business licenses be paid by June It was moved, seconded and passed that the regular meeting of Council be held at 5 P. M. on the second (2nd) Wednesday of the month, effective with the next meeting. It was called to the attention of Council that some signs 9n the island are causing traffic hazards, it is the opinion of dounoll that they should be removed. Protests were filed by D. H. Rhoad and Mathew C. Mathews protesting against the assessment placed on their proPerty. The matter was referred to the Assessment Committee. A petition was received from W. 0. Metts requesting per- mission to sell whiskey at his place on Butler Avenue and 1st Street, if Council changes the Ordinance allowing more places to sell whiskey. Received as information. It was moved, seconded and passed that Henry M. Buckley be elected Clerk of Council and Ex-Officio Treasurer at an annual salary of $4,410.00, payable monthly; David A. McCutchen be elect- ed Chief of Police and Ex- Officio Tax Collector at an annual salary of $3,525.00, payable monthly; Thomas M. Reed be elected Superinten- dent of the Public Works Department and the Water Department at an annual salary of $4,265.55, payable monthly; J. W. Lang be elected Manager of the Water Department and also Building and Plumbing In- spector at an annual salary of $3,354.12, payable; that Dr. C. A. Henderson.be elected Health Officer, no salary or fees; that J. Guy Burke be elected Chief of thb',Fire Department at an annual . salary of $360.00, payable monthly.
