Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Ga.
July 13, 1955.
The regular meeting of Town Council was held today at 8 P.M. in the
Council Room, and was attended by Mayor Strong, who presided, Councilmen
Brown, Powers, Lovell, Meddin, Hosti, Town Attorney Solms,Jr, Mr.J. W. Lang,
Supt. Reed and Chief McCutchen.
Mr. Lang reported that in connection with the construction of the grand
stand of the Savannah Beach Athletic Association, it was difficult to get Mr.
Logan to cooperate, Councilman Hosti suggested that he should be compelled to
put liability insurance on it, Mr. Solms stated that it is not a public lia-
bility insurance is not required by the Town.
Mr. Reed reported that the Town Hall Building needs to be repainted
and also Fifteenth Street is in bad condition, it was decided that the street
would be scarified if a road patrol could be borrowed.
Chief McCutchen reported that there is a bad spot in the ceiling of the
jail due to a leak in the roof and he was instructedto have repairs made.
The minutes ofthe meetings of May llth and June 8th were read and adopted.
It was moved, seconded and passedthat bills for General government for the
month of June amounting to $10,288.04 and -bills for the Water Department amounting
$924.21 be paid.
It was moved, seconded and passed that theMayor be authorized to donate
not more than $75.00 toward the cost of the opening of the Memorial Bridge at
Thunderbolt on July 18th.
The Mayor read a letter from Mrs. Eleanor McCullom, who resides in the area
of Fourteenth Street and Sixth Avenue, calling attention to several children having
been molested by men in this vicinity at night and requested that a street light
be placed there, referred to 0ouncilman Brown.
The Mayor announced that the new prison camp would shortly be finished and .
one of the items needed now was a large refrigerator, and stated that the date
should be set for the opening, Mr. Solms Suggested that the Commissioners, and Mr.
Burns should be entertained for the help given in connection with the new camp.
It was moved, seconded and passed that the clerk by authorized to purchase
a new 1955 City Directory for the sum of $36.00.
It was moved, seconded and passed that a new water sample kit be purchased
from the Georgia Health Department for $15.00 to replace the one which is now worn
out.
It was moved, seconded and passed that Dr. Walter W. Otto be appointed Health
Officer for the Town without remuneration to succeed Dr. C. H. Henderson; deceased.
A request by the Chapel-by-the-Sea Baptist Church be permitted to erect a
sign on their property on Butler Avenue was approved.
A request of Mr. Spencer Connerat that some of the "No Parking" signs be
relettered and relocated on Thirteenth Street was referred to Councilman Hosti.

In connection with the suggested Private Vehicle Parking Areas, Mr. Solms
stated that he had talked with his father relative to the use of part of Beach
Lot #101,Ward 5, for this purpose and also Mr. Brown would talk to W. H. Haar
relative to using some of the land on Beach Lots 91, 92 & 93, Ward 4, for this
purpose.

Mr. Harry G. Butler requested permission, as a property owner, to purchase
some of the land beyond the bulkhead in front of hisproperty on Venetian Drive.
This matter was referred to Mayor Strong.
Council was informed by the Clerk of the illness of Mrs. Louise Griffin,
Assistant in his office, and stated that at the present time she is not in condi-
tion to continue her work and suggested that she be given three months leave of
absence without pay effective July 15th.
It was moved, seconded and passed that when the town employees work overtime
at night spraying for mosquitoes that they be paid for overtime.
It was moved, seconded and passed that the_'following resolution, thanking
Warden L. C. Burns and the County Commissioners for their cooperation in connection
with the construction of the New Prison Camp, be passed.
There being no further business, Council adjourned, subject to the call of
the Mayor.

The regular meeting of Town Council was held today at 8 P.M. in the
Council Room and was attended by Mayor Strong, who presided, Councilmen
Peters, Brown, Powers, Lovell, Meddin, Town Attorney Solms, Jr.,Mr. J. W.Lang,
Supt. Reed, Chief McCutchen, S. J. Thomas and Dr. Paul Fleming.
Dr. Fleming stated that he contemplated opening a fifteen (15) bed
hospital using one of the buildings in which the old base hospital was located
in Fort Screven, after some discussion Dr. Fleming and Mr. Thomas were excused.
Mr. Solms was requested to handle the matter and report to Dr. Fleming.
Mr. Lang reported that the number of delinquent water takers had dropped
from eighty to forty.
Superintendent Reed reported that the Town Hall was being painted, that
the New Prison Camp had been completed and that with the north easterly winds
that we have had recently the beach had lowered somewhat and some of the
jetties were exposed.
