RE: No Smoking Zone
We have observed and are getting feedback about smoking on library grounds. The Town regulation
regarding smoking restricts it to outside 25 feet of any municipal building. 25 feet from the library does
not include most of the bench area at the front or the tables. We are recommending a broader no
smoking area to include all library property.
Here is the response I received from Town Attorney Mark Reich regarding the authority to make such a
policy:
Leone -
The Trustees have unique authority with respect to the Library property. In my opinion the Trustees can
enact a broader policy with respect to property under their care and custody. They could not, of course,
create a more lenient policy.
