The purpose of this Letter to Council (LTC) is to transmit to you a Weekly Report from the Bal
Harbour Police Department that I requested in order to enhance the flow of communication
and transparency.

AOA/Surfside Police
9578 Harding Avenue (CVS)
Narrative / Comments
Surfside police were summoned to the CVS pharmacy regarding an unfamiliar odor in the store.
At the request of Surfside Police, Bal Harbour police officers assisted with the evacuation of the
store. Miami Dade Fire Rescue responded and located the source of the odor which was deemed
non -hazardous. The store was subsequently re -opened for business.

Ordinance/Code Violation
10295 Collins Avenue(Ritz Carlton)
Narrative / Comments
Bal Harbour police officers received information of a possible code violation at the Ritz Carlton
Hotel. An officer responded and observed the loading dock bay door opened and the garbage
dumpsters improperly exposed. The officer contacted a member of the Hotel's management staff
which rectified the situation. Code enforcement personnel followed up on the violation.

Beach Ranger Detail

Narrative / Comments
Due to the "spring break recess" an additional police officer was assigned to the beach in order to ensure
the safety of our visitors and residents. The officer provided an increase presence on the beach as well as
ensuring that all Bal Harbour village ordinances were observed. 177 casual citizen contacts were reported
by the officers assigned to the detail.

Criminal Mischief /Graffiti
10200 Block North Lot

Narrative / Comments
While conducting an area check, a Bal Harbour police officer discovered freshly spray painted graffiti on a
bridge support column. The type of graffiti is not gang related but appears to be affiliated with a rock band.
After photographing the area, Bal Harbour Public Works scrubbed the column and painted over the Graffiti.
Video surveillance was obtained and an information flyer was disseminated. The Bal Harbour Police
criminal investigation is currently in the process of obtaining additional evidence and following up on all
leads.

Narrative / Comments
A contract worker driving a rental truck backed over a sprinkler head thus damaging the assembly. Public
Works supervisor responded to the scene and repairs were immediately made.

Assist a Citizen
10200 Block on the Beach
Narrative / Comments
A teenage male got caught up in a rip current while swimming in the ocean. An off duty police
officer who was surfing attempted to rescue the male but despite all attempts the swimmer was
pulled away by the current. A nearby boat pulled the teen out of the water without incident. The
off duty officer swallowed sea water during the attempted rescue and fell ill a few minutes after
exiting the beach area. Both the teen and the off duty officer were treated by Miami Dade Fire
Rescue personnel and transported to area hospitals as a pre -caution.

Bal Harbour Police and Miami Dade Fire Units were dispatched to a residential fire. After arriving on the
scene they discovered that the fire had been extinguished by the residents. The fire seemed to have b n
caused b fault wiringfrom an intercom. The damage was minimal and the structure was deemed saf .

Assist Miami Dade Police/Rescue
Haulover Cut / Beach Area
Narrative / Comments
The Bal Harbour Police marine patrol was requested to assist in a search and rescue of a swimmer in
distress. Several agencies including, The United States Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife and the
private fishing vessels assisted with the search. Unfortunately the swimmer was not immediately located.
After hours of searching, Miami Dade Fire Rescue divers located the male deceased under water in the
Haulover Channel by the bridge. Miami Dade Police was the primary agency on the scene.

Commercial Burglary
Oceana Construction Site
Narrative / Comments
Supervisors discovered that a burglary had occurred overnight to one of the construction office/trailers. No
exterior fence damage was located however the perpetrators did make forced entry into the trailer by
prying open a door. Once inside the unknown suspects removed several I -Pads and other property
totaling over $8,000 dollars. The Bal Harbour Crime Scene technician responded to photograph and
process the scene for evidence. The Bal Harbour Police detective responded and immediately began to
establish leads based on evidence located on the scene.

Burglary Auto

Narrative / Comments
The victims discovered their vehicle had been burglarized upon returning from shopping. An examination
of the vehicle revealed that the driver side door handle had been damaged and was in all likelihood the
manner in which the suspects gained entry. The suspects removed a bag containing a laptop, currency
and other personal items. The Bal Harbour Police crime scene technician processed the scene for
evidence.
