OFFICE OF THE VILLAGE MANAGER LETTER TO COUNCIL
NO. 104-2016
To: Mayor Martin Packer and Members of the Village Council
From: Jorge M. Gonzalez, Village Manager
Date: May 27, 2016
Subject: Bal Harbour Police Department - Memorial Day Weekend Preparations
The purpose of this Letter to Council (LTC) is to inform that as Memorial Day Weekend is
upon us, our community certainly experiences the impacts of the many visitors that converge
upon our beach, Haulover Park and neighboring cities during this major holiday weekend.
Please keep in mind that this year Memorial Day Weekend commences on Saturday, May
28, 2016 through Monday, May 30, 2016 (Memorial Day). Much like in years past, we expect
to see a substantial increase in traffic during the holiday weekend. As a result, the Bal Harbour
Village Police Department has developed an operational plan that will address the increased
volume of visitors to the Village, and specifically the impact this poses to our residents. The
Village will have additional police staffing and directed patrol activities. It is our goal to ensure
the public safety for our residents and visitors and to address the particular needs created by
the increased volume of both vehicular and foot traffic within our jurisdiction.
The following are some useful and important reminders for you and your family during
Memorial Day Weekend 2016:
Traffic: Residents should expect traffic congestion in the area, particularly during the
daylight hours. Based on the experience over the past several years, peak traffic
congestion occurs on the Sunday of this holiday weekend.
Towing of Unauthorized Vehicles: Residents should be aware that unauthorized
vehicles that may park on your property cannot be removed by Bal Harbour Police
Department (BHPD) wreckers. The vehicle would need to be removed by the towing
companies that each of your associations have privately contracted. The Bal Harbour
Police Department will respond to requests for police assistance; however, the BHPD
will not be able to intervene with the removal of these vehicles.
Beach Safety: As you enjoy the Village's beautiful beaches, please remember that
there are no lifeguards on duty. As recommended by the U.S. Lifesaving Association,
abide by the most common safety tips - swim with a buddy (if possible), use sunscreen
and drink water.
We hope you enjoy a safe and happy Memorial Day Weekend. Should you have any
questions or require additional information, please feel free to call me or the Chief directly.
