JMG/RI IN MEMORIAM MARK NATHAN OVER.TON AUGUST 23, 1962 - NOVEMBER 3, 2016 MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH 4497 WEST 1ST AVENUE , HIALEAH, FLORIDA First Reading: Wisdom 4:7-14 The upright, though he die before his time, will find rest. Length of days is not what makes age honorable, nor number of years the true measure of life; understanding, this is grey hairs, untarnished life, this is ripe old age. Having won God's favor, he has been loved and, as he was living among sinners, has been taken away. He has been carried off so that evil may not warp his understanding or deceitfulness seduce his soul; For the fascination of evil throws good things into the shade, and the whirlwind of desire corrupts a simple heart. Having come into perfection so soon, he has lived long; his soul being pleasing to the lord, he has hurried away from the wickedness around him. Yet people look on, uncomprehending; and it does not enter their heads. This is the Word of the Lord Psalm 91 Often called the prayer for law enforcement, firefighters and soldiers, Psalm 91 tells of God's protection over those who face danger as part of their daily lives. Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. If you say, "The Lord is my refuge," and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. "Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation." Second Reading: Romans 8:31-35, 37-39 "If God is for us, who can be against us?" Since God did not spare the Only Begotten, but gave Christ up for the sake of us all, we may be certain, after such a gift, that God will freely give us everything. Who will bring a charge against God's chosen ones? Since God is the one who justifies, who has the power to condemn? Only Christ Jesus who died - or rather was raised - and sits at the right hand of God, and who now intercedes for us! Who will separate us form the love of Christ? Trouble? Calamity? Persecution? Hunger? Naked-ness? Danger? Violence? Yet in all this we are more than conquerors because of God who has loved us. For I'm certain that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, neither the height nor depths -nor anything else in all creation -will be able to separate us from the love of God that comes to us in Christ Jesus, our Savior. This is the Word of the Lord Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:1-12 When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them saying The Beatitudes: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you. This is the Gospel of the Lord Prayer of the Faithful: Our Response will be "Lord hear our Prayer" In Baptism Mark received the light of Christ. Scatter the darkness now and lead him over the waters of death. We pray to the Lord Our brother Mark was nourished at the table of the savior. Welcome him into the halls of the heavenly banquet. We pray to the Lord Our brother Mark served his country faithfully as a law enforcement officer, we pray that God may look over all who serve our communities that our good Lord may al- ways keep them safe. We pray to the Lord The family and friends of Mark seek comfort and consolation. Heal their pain and dispel the darkness and doubt that come from grief. We pray to the Lord We are assembled here in the faith and confidence to pray for our brother Mark. Strengthen our hope so that we may live in the expectation of your son's coming. We pray to the Lord What Will Matter? Michael Josephson Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear. So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won't matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end. It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant. So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you bought but what you built, not what you got but what you gave. What will matter is not your success but your significance. What will matter is not what you learned but what you taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example. What will matter is not your competence but your character. What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many feel a lasting loss when you're gone. What will matter is not your memories but the memories that live in those who loved you. What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what. Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident. It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice. Choose to live a life that matters!
