Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Ga.
June 12, 1957.
The regular meeting of Town Council was held today at 8 P M in the Council Roam and
was attended by Acting Mayor Meddin, who presided, and Councilmen Peters, Hosti,
Brown, Waters, Lovell, Town Attorney Solms,jr., Supt. Reed, Chief McCutchen, Mr.
J. W. Tang, Mrs. J. E. Gay and Randy Gould.
Mrs. Gay requested permission to place a sign right on the street at the edge of
Atlantic & Butler Avenues but stated that she had been having difficulty with a
Mr. Ashby and had been very much annoyed by him regarding the sign. It was stated
that a sign had been in this location for at least fourteen years. Mrs. Gay was
excused. It was moved, seconded and passed that Mrs. Gay be permitted to move the
sign and re- locate it at the edge of Atlantic and Butler Avenues.
Mr. Gould requested that something be done to minimize a very bad condition in Fort
Screven caused by a great number of mosquitoes in that section and requested that
tie old parade ground be drained and cleared of underbrush. Mr. Reed stated that
this area would have to be cut by hand as the bull dozer cannot be used to do this
work. Mr. Gould was excused.
Mr. Lang reported that the owners of the DeSoto Beach Hotel Pool wants to drain the
pool on to the beach. Councilman Hosti stated that they could put in a dry well
to batch the back splash and when the pool is drained for refilling the water could
by pumped over the sea wall and on to the beach. It was agreed that this would
be agreeable subject to Health Department approval.
Bids were opened for the purchase of a half ton pick-up truck for use in the Water
Department. The J. C. Lewis submitted a bid of $1566.20 net, International Harvester
Company submitted a bid of $1366.50net and Dearing Chevrolet submitted a bid of $1228.88
net. Bid was awarded to the Dearing Chevrolet Company.
Chief McCutchen reported that the weekend traffic is getting bigger all thetime and
suggested that the routes of the entrances and exits of the parking areas be reversed
that is 16th Street traffic be routed to move west to Butler Avenue and 17th and 18th
Street traffic be routed east and also that 14th street traffic be routed west and
15th street traffic be routed east. It was decided to give more thought to this
matter. Chief McCutchen requested that two women be employed to work on weekends
and extra days to check the parking meters from 11 A.M. to 7 P M and that they be
paid at least $6.00 per day each. It was moved and seconded that the request be
granted.
Councilman Brown reported that he hhd contacted W. H. Haar with the view of using
an area East of Butler Avenue and South of 15th Street to put in an additional
parking area but that it would be necessary for the Town to pay the cost of paving
this area which would park approximately 140 cars and which would cost about $9750.00, .
received as information.
It was moved, seconded and passed that bills for General Government amounting to
$5,463.24 and bills for the later Department amounting to $1,377.82 be paid.
Acting Mayor Meddin called for nominations for the office of Mayor to fill the un-
expired term of the late John L. Strong. Councilman Peters nominated Councilman
James A. Brown and moved that the nominations be closed. Councilman Hosti seconded
and the motion passed. Mr. Brown will contact Judge Heery to have the oath of office
administered to him. Mayor Elect Brown thanked the Board for their consideration
of him stating he appreciated the confidence found in him by the Board and will do
the best he can.

Acting Mayor Meddin asked the Board's view as to a new Alderman, it was decided that
a group will meet at Mr. Meddin's house next Wednesday to select a new Alderman.
Councilman Hosti informed Council that Mrs. Dtn J. Sheehan had requested permission
to be taken off of a water meter and put on a flat rate for the use of water at her
residence. It was decided that if she would cut off the sprinkler system that it
would be agreeable to have the meter discontinued and she be placed on a flat rate.
The minutes of the meeting of May 8th were read and adopted.
It was moved, seconded and passed that Town Attorney Solms be paid Five Hundred($500.00)
Dollars as his fee in connection with the suit of Mark Tarver against the Town and
which the Town won. Mr. Solms stated th�t he feels that their attorneys will appeal
to a higher court and suggested paying them at least Five Hundred ($500.00) - Dollars.
Council was informed that effective July 1, 1957 the Town Employees will go on Social
Security.
It was moved, seconded and passed that taxes for the years
the Savannah Peach Athletic Association be cancelled.
At the request of property owners living on Izlar Avenue,
stallation of another street light in that area.
Councilman Hosti suggested that at the opening of Council Meetings that a prayer by said
by one of the ministers or priests from the religious organizations on the island. Same
received as information.

Island, Georgia, and being an employee of the Town of Savannah Beach, and the re-
cipient of public funds for services rendered as such employee, do hereby solemnly
swear and affirm that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the
Constitution of the State of Georgia, and that I am not a member of the Communist
Party and that I have no sympathy for the doctrines of communism and will not
lend my aid, my support, my advice, my counsel, nor my influence to the Communist
Party or to the teachings of communism.
