Gonzalez, Village Manager Date: November 22, 2017 Subject: LETTER TO COUNCIL NO. 196-2017 Mayor Gabriel Groisman and Members of the Village Council Hurricane Irma Relief Efforts - Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive The purpose of this Letter to Council (LTC) is to share with you details about the Village's recent efforts to aid migrant farmworker families impacted by Hurricane Irma. At the September 2017 Council meeting, Councilwoman Cohen asked that the Village explore ways to help victims of Hurricane Irma, particularly those impacted in agricultural areas of South Florida. Bal Harbour Village partnered with the Homestead Farmworkers Association (a 501(C)3 non-profit organization) to provide Thanksgiving food baskets to families of migrant farmworkers who have been financially impacted by Hurricane Irma. The Village collected food donations from residents and staff and were able to put together 38 baskets with complete Thanksgiving meals to benefit 38 different families. These baskets all included a frozen turkey, cranberry sauce, fresh fruits and vegetables, canned goods, and a dessert. The baskets were all delivered to the Homestead Farmworkers Association on November 21 so that they could be distributed before Thanksgiving Day. A special thank you to our staff in the Recreation division of Parks & Public Spaces Department who spearheaded the collections, assembly, and distribution of the baskets.
