70TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ON
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 12
Bal Harbour Village continues to celebrate its 70th anniversary
with a celebration on Bal Harbour beach on Sunday, February 12,
2017. This event includes a concert, party and fireworks display
(see page 5 for invitation). Residents are invited to an exclusive
VIP reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by a performance
by the Palm Beach Symphony, a dance party with a Latin jazz band
and ending with a spectacular fireworks display over Bal Harbour
beach. Please bring a photo ID with your Bal Harbour address for
you and your guests. The entrance to the VIP section is locat-
ed just off the beach path behind the Ritz-Carlton Bal Harbour.
Follow the lights to the registration table to access the event. We
encourage you to walk or take the Bal Harbour Shuttle which will
run along Collins Avenue from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. that day with a
special drop-off/pick-up at the Jetty. If you plan to attend, please RSVP by February 8 by
sending an e-mail to: RSVP@balharbourfl.gov.
Other events held to commemorate the 70th anniversary have been a huge success. The
opening event on November 6, 2016 included reviewing a historical exhibit at the Sea View
Hotel led by renowned South Florida historian Dr. Paul George. The event continued with
an outdoor tour along the Village’s beautiful beach path. The display can now be viewed at
Village Hall, where it will remain permanently. On November 19, 2016, Bal Harbour brought
back the family tradition of the “Movie on the Beach” with hundreds of residents enjoying
refreshments, entertainment and watching a film under the stars.
Be sure to engage social media while enjoying our anniversary events.
Mention BalHarbour70 when “tweeting” or updating Facebook.

NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW SIGNAGE, BEACH PATH AND 70TH ANNIVERSARY FINALE
Bal Harbour Village has embraced the new year with planned special events during the 2017
winter season and the completion of several important projects. Our successful 70th anni-
versary will be capped off with a finale celebration that will feature a reception, concert, party
and fireworks display over Bal Harbour beach on Sunday, February 12. See page 5 for your
invitation. The series of milestone events over the past months has reconnected the Village to
its rich history while reinforcing the pride we have for our Village paradise.
Residents and visitors will be seeing new informational and directional signs throughout Bal
Harbour. These attractively updated signs have a unified graphic design that includes the
new Village logo, colors and brand. Most importantly, the new signs will identify locations and
provide information, directions and Village rules (see page 6). A story on page 3 details the
opening of a redesigned and enhanced public beach access path at 102nd Street and Collins
Avenue just south of the new Bal Harbour Oceana. Residents and visitors will enjoy their walk
to the beach along this beautifully designed walkway lined with landscaping and benches. On
page 4 there is a summary of recent Unscripted events. Our art and culture program continues
to provide exclusive world-class tours and events for residents.
Our new and updated Village website has been unveiled and is now in place. Please be sure to
visit it at: balharbourfl.gov. Remember to install the My Bal Harbour mobile app on your phone
by going to the App Store or Google Play Store and searching for “My Bal Harbour.” You can
also sign up on our website or via the mobile app to receive important information about Bal
Harbour Village via text and email. We also encourage you to follow us on Facebook@balhar-
bourgov and Twitter@balharbourgov. If you ever have any questions or need any information,
please feel free to visit or call Village Hall at 305-866-4633, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC LIBRARY OPEN IN BAY HARBOR ISLANDS
A new Miami-Dade Public Library has opened within the new Morris N. Broad Community Cen-
ter at 1175 95th Street in Bay Harbor Islands. Bal Harbour residents can use their library cards

sual materials, as well as free WiFi and internet access, highspeed desktops, tablet computers
and 21st century learning tools. The facility is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Bal Harbour Village Council passed a resolution last year to update and replace
all of the informational and directional signage throughout the Village. Approx-
imately 150 new signs will be manufactured and installed, all with a unified and
consistent design that reinforces the Bal Harbour brand and logo. Equally important
is providing residents and visitors with updated information, directions and Village
rules throughout Bal Harbour. The high quality signs (see some samples at left) will
be weather resistant and will be installed at locations on the beach, along the beach
path, jetty, parks, streets and Village Hall.

7BAL HARBOUR VILLAGE JANUARY–FEBRUARY 2017
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has begun a major bridge rehabilitation
project on the Haulover Bridge at the north end of Bal Harbour. Residents and visitors will be
affected as they drive or walk over and around the area of the bridge.
While most of the work will take place underneath the bridge, the work requires the closing
of traffic lanes during non-peak periods, as well as the closing of some sidewalks and roads
under the bridge. The parking lot under the bridge may also be closed at certain times. The
work will include cleaning and painting all the structural steel, repairing deteriorated concrete
decks and columns, strengthening bridge beams and replacing seawalls.
The closings will be temporary and will take place from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on weekdays and
weekends. Residents should allow for extra time when traveling over the bridge and watch for
posted signs, detours and speed limits. For your own safety and the safety of others, please
take caution when driving, biking or walking near the construction zone and also watch for
construction workers in the area. The project is expected to be completed by December 2018.

TAX SEASON IDENTITY THEFT PROTECTION
As we enter the tax filing season, the Bal Harbour Police Department reminds you to protect
yourself against tax scams that attempt to steal your identity. People could lose a lot of money
when their personal information is stolen through tax scams and fraudulent IRS communica-
tions. The IRS does not initiate any communication with a tax payer via email, text message
or social media. The IRS does not threaten tax payers with lawsuits, imprisonment or other
enforcement action. Callers claiming to be employed by the IRS try to steal personal identifi-
cation information. The caller may even become aggressive and hostile, in particularly with the
elderly. Do not provide any personal information. The IRS will never call to request imme-
diate payment utilizing a specific payment method such as a pre-paid debit card, gift card or
wire transfer.
During the 2016 tax season last year, the IRS reported a 400 percent increase of tax related
schemes via email and text messaging. The emails or text messages may contain information
regarding your filing status, refund amount and possibly your personal identification number
(PIN). Once the victim clicks on the email, they are forwarded to official looking websites re-
questing your personal information or contain malware utilized in obtaining personal informa-
tion. If you receive an email as described above, do not respond or click on any of its links. The
email should be deleted or forwarded to the IRS at: phishing@irs.gov.
Another recent scam is directed toward parents or grandparents of college students in which
callers demand payment for a “Federal Student Tax” which is a non-existent tax. If the potential
victim refuses, the callers become aggressive and threaten to have the student arrested.
The Bal Harbour Police Department reminds you to protect yourself against tax scams and
identity theft by taking the proper steps.
