PARK FOUNTAIN NAMED IN MEMORY OF CHIEF MARK OVERTON ON TH E PO LI CE B E AT LOOKING BACK ... SAFETY FOR RESIDENTS ALWAYS A PRIORITY Since its incorporation, Bal Harbour Village has focused on ensuring safety for our resi- dents and community. We are appreciative and proud of all the men and women who have worked hard over the past 70 years to make our community as safe as possible. Look for more history items in future newsletters. CRIME AWARENESS TIPS “Spoofing” is a term used for falsely identifying one’s self to make contact with a person. There are many ways a person can ‘spoof’ another. Caller ID, text messages, emails and IP addresses can all be spoofed to make a person comfortable enough to respond to the communication. Caller ID spoofing can occur when a caller deliberately falsifies the information sent to a caller ID display to hide their identity. The caller’s intent is usually to trick someone into providing personally identifiable information, such as a social security number, checking account num- ber, or credit card information, to be used in fraudulent activity or sold illegally. The Caller ID Act of 2009 made it a crime to use caller ID spoofing for causing harm, defrauding someone, or wrongfully obtaining anything of value. If you believe you are being spoofed, remember the following: • Never give out any personal information such as your social security number, account number, passwords, credit card or other identifying information if you receive an unexpect- ed call or are at all suspicious. • If you receive a call from a business or any government agency requesting personal infor- mation, hang up and call the phone number on your account statement, or on their website to verify the authenticity of the request. • Be cautious if being pressured for information immediately and aggressively. • If you have a voicemail account as part of your phone service, be sure to set a password. Some services allow instant access if you call into your voicemail from your number. A hack- er can spoof your number and have access to your voicemail if there is no password set up. Remain vigilant and report all suspicious behavior immediately to the Bal Harbour Police, by calling 305-866-5000. PEDESTRIAN SAFETY TIPS Bal Harbour Village is a very walkable community. Residents and visitors are encouraged to use these safety tips when walking the main streets and throughout our neighborhoods. • Cross the street only at intersections. • Do not jaywalk. • Always used marked crosswalks where available. • Avoid crossing the street in the middle of the block or between parked cars. • Make eye contact with drivers when crossing busy streets and continue to watch out for traffic the entire time you are in the crosswalk. • At intersections, always check over your shoulder for turning vehicles before you step off the curb. • Stop at the curb and look left and right and left again before you step onto the street.
