Gonzalez, Village Manager )tair Da te: May 26, 2017 Subject: Memorial Day Weekend Preparations The purpose of this Letter to Council (LTC) is to inform you of the Village's plans to prepare for the Memorial Day weekend. Our community experiences the impacts of the many visitors that converge upon our beach, Haulover Park, the Bal Harbour Shops, and neighboring cities during this major holiday weekend. This year, Memorial Day Weekend commences on Friday, May 26 through Monday, May 29 (Memorial Day). Much like in years past, we expect to see a substantial increase in traffic during the holiday weekend. As a result, the Bal Harbour Village Police Department has developed an operational plan that will address the increased volume of visitors to the Village, and specifically the impact this poses to our residents. The Village will have additional police staffing and directed patrol activities. It is our goal to ensure the public safety for our residents and visitors and to address the particular needs created by the increased volume of both vehicular and foot traffic within our jurisdiction. The following are some useful and important reminders during the weekend: • Traffic - Residents should expect traffic congestion in the area, particularly during the daylight hours. Based on the experience over the past several years, peak traffic congestion occurs on the Sunday of this holiday weekend; however with the air show taking place on Miami Beach this year we may experience congestion on Saturday as well. • Towing of Unauthorized Vehicles - Residents should be aware that unauthorized vehicles that may park on your property cannot be removed by the Police Department wreckers. The vehicle would need to be removed by the towing companies that each association, has privately contracted with. The Bal Harbour Police Department will respond to requests for police assistance; however, they will not be able to intervene with the removal of these vehicles. As recommended by the U.S. Lifesaving Association, abide by the most common safety tips - swim with a buddy (if possible), use sunscreen and drink water. Additionally, make sure to view the warning flags for the day regarding the beach conditions.
