The improvements will include: streetscape enhancements, wider sidewalks, new streetlights, diagonal parking improvements, improved drainage, and a roundabout at the corner. The existing Lifeguard Building at the South Beach lot, formerly the Parking Office, will be demolished to make room for the roundabout, and construction will at times affect parking, sidewalks and street traffic. However, businesses should have no trouble remaining open, and access to shops and homes will be accommodated with temporary crossings as needed. All major construction should be completed by March with landscaping and final improvements finished by May. Additional signage will re-direct traffic when necessary down 14th Street, and to provide information on parking and directions for motorists. The plan will leave at least one lane of traffic open at all times during the project. Affected areas include Tybrisa between Butler and the Strand, and the Strand from Tybrisa heading south to 18th Street. Parking access and directional signage will also be available to support events such as the Celebrate Tybee and Festival of the Arts on the weekend of October 20-21 as well as other events scheduled through the affected time period. The Tybrisa Improvement Project was first envisioned in 2004 to develop the South Beach Business District, and approval was given by the City Council in the 2007 budget. Further details will be provided about closures and detours after the contract is awarded. The City will provide information throughout the project to keep residents and businesses informed of progress, changes, and events that may affect traffic, parking, or foot traffic. As always, information will be posted to the City’s web site, www.cityoftybee.org, to the local cable access Channel 7 on the Comcast network, and via press releases. More details about the Tybrisa Improvement Project can be found on the City’s web site at http://www.cityoftybee.org/BuildingAndZoning.aspx?CNID=895.
