Box 2749 – 403 Butler Avenue, Tybee Island, Georgia 31328-2749 (866) 786-4573 – FAX (866) 786-5737 www.cityoftybee.org PRESS RELEASE: Contact: Diane Schleicher, City Manager For immediate release (912) 786- 4573, x109 Tybee Downtown Construction Efforts Under Way Tybee Island, Ga. – (November 21, 2007) Much of Tybee Island’s business takes place on the South End on The Strand and Tybrisa streets. In order to provide the best experience for Tybee visitors, the Island ’s Master Plan has long had a goal of revitalizing this business area with a face lift to provide enhanced services, a more pleasing landscaping design, and easier parking. This construction effort is at long last under way, but construction does not mean closure! Restaurants, shopping, and entertainment venues remain open for holiday dining, merrymaking, and gift shopping excursions. Parking remains available nearby in the 14th Street parking lot, which will be unaffected by the construction, and contractors will have various smaller pockets of parking available throughout the project. Tybee’s traditional seasonal activities are still scheduled to take place at the usual times. These events include: Dec. 8th - Annual Christmas Parade begins at 3pm and Lights On for Tybee – The Parade ends downtown with several other events afterward at Tybee Oaks, Sundance Square, and a Children ’s Party with a personal appearance by St. Nick at the YMCA. After dark, the Island comes alight with caroling, Christmas decorations, and residents’ displays in the second Lights On for Tybee during December. Dec. 31st - New Year’s Fireworks – Free and visible from the beaches on the east side of the Island, this traditional display prom ises beauty and excitement, with plenty of entertainment on the South End! Jan. 1st 11am-1pm – 7th Annual Polar Bear Plunge – Awards given for wackiest duds, with the swim beginning at high noon on the ol’ atomic clock, and the official event begins with the ceremonial blowing of the conch by the world famous "Goose". March 15th – 3pm – The Tybee Irish Heritage Festival and Parade runs the length of Butler Avenue (and more!) Tybee’s Irish come out to make a grand celebration and a fun, family event. The City’s website hosts a continually updated posting about the current status of this construction project. Go to www.cityoftybee.org and look for “Tybrisa Update”. # # #
