Each night, the crew ensures that the south parking lot by the Strand has parking spaces cleared and available for visitors to the area bars and restaurants, and parking in this lot is free during the construction project. All of the east-west through streets, except for Tybrisa, are also cleared for local traffic so that residents can reach their homes in the neighborhood as well. Sidewalk access is available to all businesses during normal business hours, to allow customers entrance to any and all shops. Tybee will host a fireworks celebration on New Year’s Eve that is expected to be an outstanding event. Parking will remain available in the parking lot just north of the Parker Pier and Pavilion, as it is throughout the construction, so that revelers will have a convenient place to come to enjoy what promises to be an exciting evening. Restaurants and entertainment venues are nearby the Pier as well as elsewhere on the Island and for those who wish to make the evening special, there are several hotels and bed and breakfasts nearby, as well as the Tybee Shuttle to make sure no one needs to drive unsafely! In weekly status update meetings, City staff and concerned business owners and residents exchange concerns and bring the best, proactive ideas to improve what all agree is a difficult situation. In response to these concerns, temporary lighting is now running in the evening to illuminate the parking area after the work crews depart for the day. After surveys and planning sessions that have taken place over the last several years, citizens continue to provide feedback during the project which the City is incorporating into plans and that will end up improving the final results for all parties. Once this effort is complete, the new look will provide a beautifully enhanced atmosphere to the neighborhood, as well as providing easier and less costly access when infrastructure repairs are required, improved storm water runoff, and more environmentally friendly lighting. The City’s website hosts a continually updated posting about the current status of this construction project.
