Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Ga.
August 13, 1958.
The regular meeting of Town Council vas held today at 8 P.M. in the Council Room '
and was attended by Mayor Brown, who presided, and Councilmen Meddin, Lovell,
Waters, Hutton, Town Attorney Solms, Jr.,Superintendent Reed, Chief McCutchen, G:
F. Garin, Gordon Miller, T. S. Chu, C. S. Mays, Blanton, Bennett.
Mr. Blanton representing the American Heritage Life Insurance Company presented a
plan of employees benefits to cover the Town's employees after which he was excused.
No action was taken in the matter.
Sgt. C. S. Mays protested against the fire hydrant which is located on his property
in Fort Screven stating that several times some Of the Town's crews have turned on
the water from this plug and washed out a portion of his lawn. He requested -that
this be corrected. He also requested that street markers be put up in Fort
Screven and stated in the area where he is located that the property owners would
be willing to supply the signs if the Town would put them up. He also mentioned
that in some sections of this area mosquitoes were breeding. Sergeant M ys was
,excused. The Mayor stated that his request deserved merit.
Messrs. Miller, Chu and Garis representing the Savannah Beach Chamber of Commerce
requested that the Town donate to them at least $1000.00 to help take care of
their operating expenses for the current year. It was moved, seconded and passed
that the Town donate $500.00 to the Chamber. '
Superintendent Reed had nothing to report, Councilman Lovell stated that markers
should be put up in Fort screven and that the area in the vicinity of Sergeant
Mays home which is low should be filled. The matter was referred to Councilman
Lovell to handle.
Chief McCutchen had nothing to report, Councilman Lovell asked about the dog
situation and mentioned that it vas hard to get angone to do the Job. He asked
Chief MoCutchen was was the status of the used meters. which the Town had recent-
ly received. The Chief stated that it took tw:ellve to make five working meters.
The Mayor suggested that on the basis of the Chief is report that an offer be
submitted to the sellers of one —half the price for which they were sold to the
Town or the meters would be returned. It was moved, seconded and passed that the
Mayor be authorized to submit this proposition to the sellers.
The Mayor asked the Chief how many persons collected the money from the parking
meters and how long it took. The Chief stated that on an average of about one —
half a day. The Mayor stated that when the meters were installed Council agreed
that two persons should collect from the meters.
The Mayor informed Council that Mr. D.Porter Dawson, former Fire Inspector with
the City of Savannah, had offered to serve as Fire Inspector for the Town without
pay. It vas moved, seconded and passed that the policy of the Town as regards
fire protection continue as is.
The minutes of the meetings of July 9th and July 14th were read and adopted.
The Mayor informed Council that he was checking on the status of Social Security
benefits as affecting Mr. Lang who is still very ill.
It was moved, seconded and passed that the stubbing fee and tapping fee charge
against the All Saints Episcopal Church be cancelled and the}t they be allowed
free water service.

Mrs. Katherine Huggins requested that the heavy undergrowth on the west side of
Jones Avenue in the vicinity of her home be cleandddout.
A petition vas presented-requesting that a street light be installed in_the
.vicinity of 24th Street and Second Avenue.
It was moved, seconded and passed that bills for the Month of duly for General
Government amounting to $3,454.49 and bills for the Water Department a+nounting,to
$1,038.72 be paid.
The Strand Soda Shop petitioned to be relieved of a license fee of $40.00 to oper-
ate a confectionary, #50.00 to:operate-,a.pin ball machine and $30.00 to operate
two amusement machines was presented. It was moved, seconded and passed that
the pin ball machine and the two amusement machines be cancelled but that the con-
fectionary license must be paid and on Chu's Repertment Store that a fee of $50.00
for one pin ball machine and $40.00 for selling meat be cancelled.
It was also moved, seconded and passed that the 1958 license fee on pin ball machines
which had been removed from the place of operation before Jane 30th be cancelled.
Councilman Waters reported that in connection with the caving in of the storm
sewer between the Locree and Meddin properties on Chatham Avenue that no other con-
tractor except Stanley Aycock was Interested. Councilman Meddin stated that it,
does not seem to require immediate attention that It.ia_ not an emergency.
In connection with the insurance carried by the Town it vas decided to check into
this before some of the bills were paid.
It was moved, seconded and passed that the next regular meeting of Town,Council be
held at 4 P.M. on the second Wednesday of the month instead of 8 P.M.
