LETTER TO COUNCIL
NO. 159-2018
To: Mayor Gabriel Groisman and Members of the Village, ouncil
From: Jorge M. Gonzalez, Village Manager
Date: October 5, 2018
Subject: Precautionary Actions Taken Regarding Red Tide
This Letter to Council (LTC) is to inform you of precautionary actions that have been
undertaken during the red tide situation.
After sampling showing elevated levels of the algae linked to red tide, the County Mayor
closed all beaches north of the Haulover Inlet on the morning of Thursday, October 4.
Following the announcement, the Village sent a notice via our Wireless Emergency
Notification System (WENS) to various groups, including residents, hotel and security staff
and beach conditions subscribers. The content of the notice emphasized that while Bal
Harbour Beach was not deemed closed, beach goers should exercise caution.
As part of WENS, an email blast was sent to our mailing lists via our Constant Contact
system disseminating the same information. The information carousel on the homepage
of the Village website was updated to include both a beach conditions update as well as a
link to the County Mayor's memorandum on the issue.
In addition, a script was provided to police dispatchers for handling incoming calls on the
issue.
On the morning of Friday, October 5, the County Mayor reopened all beaches. The Village
will continue monitoring the red tide situation and issuing notices as necessary.
