HomeMy Public PortalAbout19591118CCMeeting1 The regular meeting of Town Council Town Hall and was attended by Mayor Maters, Lovell, Meddin, Hosti, Town Reed, Mr. Joseph Hutton and Mrs. A. Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Ga. November 18, 1959. was held today at 4 P M in the Council Room in the Brown, who presided, and Councilmen Peters, Powers, Attorney Solms, Jr., Chief McCutchen, Superintendent G. Darring. Mrs. Darring petitioned for a refund on her water bill stating that the house she was living in in Palm Terrace had a 1959 water bill against it when she purchased the pro- perty which was due by a previous occupant and which they did not pay but she did shortly after she purchased another house in Palm Terrace and moved into that one she found that there was a $15.00 balance due there and requested that since she had paid $30.00 on the other building which she only occupied a short while, that she be given credit on the new building of $15.00 which was charged against it. Mrs. Darring was excused. It was moved, seconded and passed that she be allowed a credit of 015.00 on the water rent on the house she now occupies. The Mayor informed Council that in connection with the new plans of the State Highway Department for the automobile road had been received by him and he requested Mr. Joseph Hutton to attend the meeting in connection with these plans. After giving considerable thought and discussion to them it was moved, seconded and passed that Thomas & Hutton be employed to handle certain phases of the project for the Town. Superintendent Reed reported that the new jail was progressing and that he would start on the groin when the weather permits and that work on the water tower had not started as yet. Chief McCutchen reported that a new radio is needed for the police car. He also stated that the new Ford police car had been ordered under instructions of the Police Committee. He stated that the Town should have a portable generator to be used in emergencies. The Civil Defense would pay one -half the cost of this. The Mayor asked what do we need a generator for except for hurricanes and the Chief stated that it could be used in out of the way places. The Mayor informed Council that he noted that the Grand Jury had no report of complaints against operations at Savannah Beach. The minutes of the meeting of Oc3tober 14th were read and adopted. Bills for the month of October for General Government amounting to $1,724.75 and for the Water Department amounting to $712.76 were on motion made, seconded and passed, approved for payment. Councilman 'Eaters asked what was the status of Social Security for the lblice Department and Mr. Solms stated that nothing as yet. Councilman Heetis repotted that several requests had been made to Mr. J.M.Aycock to complete the paving on Second Avenue but that no reply had been received from the Aycock Company. A request was made by the U.S.O. that the Town sponsor a dance on December 19, 1959 for the service men, the cost of which would be $75.00. It was moved, seconded and passed that the request be granted. Mr. Robert J. Bush who owns portions of Lots 5 & 6, Block 19, Fort Screven, Ward, which are part of the Forts adjacent to the Town's holdings, offered to sell them to the Town for 0850.00. It was moved, seconded and passed that '..00.00 be offered for the property and if accepted to purchase it. 10 A request was made that a street light be placed at the intersection of second Street and second Avenue. It was moved, seconded and passed that the request le granted. Mrs. Helen D. MacGregor requested that permission be granted to build on the lot the Western part of the Southern 2/3 of #81, Ward 4. Permission was granted provided the building code was complied with. There were thirty —five (35) delinquent water consumers reported.
