A special meeting of Town Council was held today at 8 P.M. in the Council Room in the Town Hall and was attended by Mayor Brown, who presided and Councilmen Hosti, Powers, Fleetwood, Lovell, Waters and Superintendent Reed. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways and means of building a new fishing per to replace the one recently damaged by the sea. The Mayor informed Council that the fishing pier, which extended out from Tybrisa Pavilion, has recently been destroyed by northeast winds and high spring tides and he wanted to ascertain if it was the desire of Council to replace the per or not. He stated that it had given considerable pleasure to quite a number of people and he hoped that something could be worked out so that it could be replaced with a new one. Qlouncil- man Fleetwood stated that it could be built on Ton property that he did not think it would he desirous to put it on private property if it could be avoided and that it should extend out at least 500 feet from the seawell. The Mayor suggested that at the head of First Street would be a good location. Councilman Hosti suggested that a groin be created by placing old automobiles, rip rap, etc.,under the proposed pavilion and also that the Town try to get county or state aid as he wanted the pier, to be free to the public. The Mayor stated that it would take time to go to the state for help that if we did it ourselves he felt that the Town could get the money that he figured with a maximum cost of the per to be not over $40,000.00 with parking available in the First Street area. He stated that at ct. Augustine,Florida, they had built a pier which had a six foot ramp which was a "T" head type per at a cost of around $18000.00. It should be built within 45 to 60 days but that the Town must have a plan and design as to how it should be built before next summer and he wanted to know Councils reaction to this. The Mayor suggested two plans under which the pier could be built - (1) The Town borrow money to build the pier and either operate or lease it, (2) They would request county or state aid to build the pier open to the public and stated that a Committee should be appointed to handle the matter. He appointed a Committee consisting of himself, Councilmen Waters and Fleetwood to check on the possibilities of building the pier for . not over ~$35,000.00 and also that they ascertain how it could be financed, have plans drawn and to put in in any location they feel feasible and submit it back to Council. Councilman Waters asked what length they had in mind and it was suggested that at least 500 feet. Councilman Hosti suggested that it be bu.il_t one foot higher than the seawall. Councilman Fleetwood made a motion that the Committee appointed above also contact the Teamsters Union and ascertain under what terms they would convey to the Town the DeSoto Beach Hotel properties and also that the fishing pier and the DeSoto Beach properties • be included in a master plan at the north end. The acquiring of the hotel properties would, among other things, provide a place to handle conventions, etc. Mayor Brown suggested that the space between,l4th and 15th Street, the southeast wing of the old Hotel Tybee, could be developed for less money than the DeSoto Bee Hotel properties. The Mayor also suggested another method of financing the construction of the pier that each lot on the island be taxes One Dollar per lot per year but let the public know before it is put into effect.
