A suecial meeting of Town Council was held today at 6 P.M. in the Council Room in the Town Hall and was attended by Mayor Brown, who presided, and Councilmen Lovell, Fleetwood, Davis, Daniels, Town Attorney Solms, Mr. James Harley, R. F. Cary, James Stettler, George Peters, Richard Grosse, Judge Shelby Myrick, Mrs. Carolyn Golden and Mrs. Joseph Petty. Judge Myrick stated that it was not necessary for managers to be present at this meeting /that he was laboring under a handicap that some of the election laws had been repealed and suggested that the Town Charter be used for the Town's election that voting machines be used, that some of the Georgia election laws have been repealed, that absentee voting had been repealed but that if it was wanted that the candidates agree to it. He stated that he has no official duty with the Town's election but he wants to help so that the election can be properly conducted. The Mayor stated that the Town had requested three (3) voting machines, that the Georgia Law pertaining to absentee ballots was repealed in 1964. Mr. Solms stated that this does not apply to the Town's elections. Judge Myrick stated that if the candidates agree for the use of absentee ballots that it would be all right. Mr. Peters asked how were absentee ballots obtained. This was explained to him by Clerk Buckley. Judge Myrick stated that the polls open at 7 A.M. and close at 6 P.M. and that the managers should be there at least one —half hour ahead of time and that there should be five (5) managers. Mr. Solms stated that three (3) machines have been requested but that two (2) will be used and one (1) kept ins; reserve. The Mayor asked if the machines should be checked on election day before the polls open, Judge Myrick stated it would Alt be well to do so. Mr. Peters wanted the Town Office closed and does not want Mr. Buckley in the Town's Office on election day but would allow one person in the office. Persons should stay 150 feet away from the polls. He was informed that the State Law calls for 250 feet. Judge Myrick stated they must agree on the distance. Mr. Peters wants the Town Hall cleared of all people except the voters and managers, he does not want any checkers. He stated that the voting list was closed in advance of the closing date. Mr. Solms stated that purging the list is a problenithat Mr. Buckley could not remove names from the list and that the registrars mo uld -not purge the list of some of the names which were on there. Judge Myrick stated that if the voters name goes on the list and should not be on it then to challenge him. Mr. Peters stated that the usual picnic which is held during past elections should not be allowed in this one. Councilman Fleetwood stated that it would be up to Council to make this decision. Mr. Peters stated that he was willing to go along as in the past but away from Town Hall. Councilman Fleetwood stated a picnic should be allowed. Mr. Peters said then he would go along. Councilman Lovell asked when the polls closed at 6 P.M. what was the procedure. Fudge Myrick stated that one of the managers should lock the front door and that those voters in the building at that time would be permitted to vote. Mr. Peters stated that none of the candidates should be around the polls. Judge Myrick stated that the candidates can politic anywhere they desire. Mr. Solms stated that the registration list must be aivertised. Judge Myrick stated that the candidates should get together, check the list and purge those who should not be on it. Mayor Brown asked if anyone objected to the use of absentee ballots, no one voiced any opposition. The Mayor stated that absentee ballots would be used. Judge Myrick stated that he would be back next Friday, the day that the machines will be brought down or will come at the pleasure of Council.
