HomeMy Public PortalAboutGolf Department Report September 2021Memo / To: City Council From: Eric McCormick, Golf Course Superintendent CC: Anette Spickard, City Manager Date: 1/9/2023 Re: Monthly Department Report – September 2021 Weather: September was warm with a light rain and cool down mid-month then a heavy rain the end of the month. We were really needing that. We had frost most of the month and pushed tee times back. Staff: At the end of September, we were at 3 full time and 6 seasonal staff of which 3 are part time. We are operating with 4 less people compared to this time last year. Greens: Greens were starting to show the signs of strain from the amount of play by the first of the month so staff aerified them after the last tournament the 11th and 12th. We aerified Cedar and Aspen the week of the 13 then finished Birch while we were closed for the parking lot pave on the 20th and 21st. Greens were healing nicely by the end of the month. Club House: The new sidewalk, which is part of the ramp project was poured the end of the month. They were originally going to pour before they paved but the asphalt showed up first. We will have to make a temporary patch between the old ramp and the sidewalk but will do that with pavers. Our plan is to bid the ramp project this winter and try to get it constructed before we open next summer. Club House Parking Lot: Granite ground and prepped the parking lot the week of the 13. To do this, we had to close the parking lot, have people park in the maintenance yards and shuttle golfers to and from the club house. This took two of my crew and one of Allan’s that were already shorthanded. Because of our experience with the golfers and the grinding, we decided to close the Golf Course for the two days that they paved. This gave us less trouble and we were able to get the parking lot paved and have it back opened for the rest of the week. While the work was being done in the parking lot, staff installed conduit for power to lights and pipe for water to the islands to allow for hook up in the future. My hope is to find funding to replace the parking lot flood lights with down lights in the islands. Restaurant: Banyan’s was struggling with staff the month of September. They restricted their hours from 10 to 5 during the parking lot grind and pave which helped us with shuttling. They have kept those hours since because of staffing issues. They did close the two days that the course was closed. Irrigation: Irrigation worked well during the month. With cooler days and shorter hours of light plus frost, the grass slowed down and did not need as much water. The replacement motor for the main pond fountain finally showed up mid-month that had been ordered since June. We will wait until next spring to put it back in. Tournaments: Our last two tournaments, the Club Championship and the 2-man Scramble, were held the first part of September. Golf Revenue: Golf revenue seemed to level out in September with the Course running about the same numbers as the previous year which was very good. COVID: The two cases of COVID in the Proshop did not spill over into the rest of their staff or our staff which is helpful as shorthanded as we are.
