HomeMy Public PortalAbout1997-16 National Hurricane Center proposed budget, personnel cuts, concernRESOLUTION NO. 97-16 A RESOLUTION OF THE VILLAGE OF KEY BISCAYNE, FLORIDA; EXPRESSING CONCERN OF THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OVER PROPOSED BUDGET AND PERSONNEL CUTS AT THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the National Weather Service's National Hurricane Center is located in Dade County; and WHEREAS, Florida is the state most likely to be adversely affected when hurricanes and tropical storms make landfall in the United States; and WHEREAS, the National Weather Service proposes to cut the budget of the National Hurricane Center, and to cut the center's staff by 24 percent; and WHEREAS, these cuts increase the risk to the people of Florida and Southern and Northern States and are contrary to the goal of protecting the public safety and welfare. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF KEY BISCAYNE, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. That the Village of Key Biscayne opposes the proposal by the National Weather Service to cut out expenses and personnel at the National Hurricane Center, leaving the people of this state with dangerously reduced protection from the threat of natural disaster. Section 2. The Village Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the President of the United States of America, U.S. Senator Bob Graham, U.S. Senator Connie Mack, U. S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, State Senator Ronald Silver and to the chief of the National Weather Service. Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption.
