Tourism Board
6:15 p.m. July 9, 2018
Town Barn, 101 E. Orange St.
Present: Chair Mary Catherine McKee, Vice Chair Matt Hughes, Kim Tesoro, Billy Maupin
Staff: Economic Development Planner Shannan Campbell
Guests: Sarah DeGennaro, Alliance for Historic Hillsborough; Micara Sessoms, Leadership
Chapel-Hill; Nathalie Santos, Town of Hillsborough
Item 1: Call meeting to order
Chair Mary Catherine McKee called the meeting to order at 6:45 p.m. Economic Development
Planner Shannan Campbell indicated that a quorum would not be present until Member Matt
Hughes arrived. Member Hughes arrived at 6:50pm due to a previous meeting.
Item 2: Consideration of changes or adjustments to the agenda
Motion: McKee moved to approve the agenda as is. Member Billy Maupin seconded.
Vote: Unanimous
Item 3: Consideration of minutes from June 4, 2018, meeting
Motion: Member Kim Tesoro moved approval of the minutes as presented. Member
Maupin seconded.
Vote: Unanimous
Item 4: General public comment
There were no comments.
Item 5: New business items
a. FY18 Audit Contract
Campbell reviewed the audit contract with the board and asked for questions.
Motion: Member Maupin motioned to approve the FY18 Audit Contract as presented.
Hughes seconded.
Vote: Unanimous.
Item 6: Old business items
a. Filling the vacant restaurant/pub seats

Campbell indicated that she has been actively engaging in volunteer board member
recruitment but so far there haven’t been any restaurant/pub applicants.
Board members suggested doing more outreach with the Town’s public information office and
also reaching out to the following businesses: Whit’s Frozen Custard, La Place, J&F Kitchen, Big
Bob’s City Grill, Jay’s Chicken Shack, Future Gatewood Steakhouse, and Nash St. Tavern.
Item 7: Staff and board comments, discussion items and monthly reports
a. Alliance for Historic Hillsborough Director and Programs Report
The Alliance held a historic brickwork workshop and coordinated a meeting with all the historic
sites to brainstorm ways they could work together. They are also planning a blood drive in
August. They gave 6 tours to 50 people.
b. Visitors Center Communications Report
The Visitors Center had 474 visitors from 26 different states and 6 countries. Social media is
being used to generate more traffic to the website by creating a blog section and doing click-
backs to the website.
c. Tourism Board Staff and Food and Beverage Tax Revenues Report and updates from Chapel
Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau.
F&B tax revenues were up 10.9% in April and overall up 7.28% or $20,920. Special events held
in town attracting visitors were Durham Symphony Orchestra- Concert in the Park,
Burwell School Garden Party Fundraiser, and the WWI Living Room Exhibit @ Visitors Center
/Poppy Project Poppies Blooming/NC and the Great War.

Motion: McKee moved to adjourn at 7:14 p.m. Hughes seconded.
