HomeMy Public PortalAbout19660720SCMeeting1 9t A special meeting of Town Council was held today at 8 P.M. in the Couincil Room in the Town Hall and was attended by Mayor Brown, who presided and Councilmen Davis, Daniels, CarylCounihan, Hohenstein, Fleetwood, Town Attorney Solms and Superintendent Reed. The meeting was called for the purpose of discussing and acting on the following: 1. Repairs to sewerage system 2. Repairs to the tractor 3. Repairs to the groins in the area of Center Street 4. Holes in sand on Inlet Ave, apparently caused by seepage in the storm sewer 5. Wages for Ben Miller, employer who is ill t,. The Mayor informed Council that Superintendent Reed reported that t44,, sanitary sewer main in Fort Sereven needs to be replaced,th t about 854 feet of pipe is needed. That parts of the main fills with sand causing the main to back up into resident's homes and that there are very few man holes in this line. Councilman Davis suggested that the old line be left as is and put in a new line. Councilman Counihan asked Mr. Reed what shaald be done? Mr. Reed stated that this line has many houses running into it and that it has practically a flat fall. He would have to dig up the line and try to salvage some of it. A letter was read from Mr. E.W. Towns, Administrator of the Convalescent Home informing Council that he planned to greatly enlarge his facilities but wanted to call attention to a serious situation which demands immediate attention, due to sewerage backing up on his property especially during heavy rains and he would like for this matter to be corrected as soon as possible. Councilman Hohenstein stated that he could see no reason but to put in the necessary sewerage mains. Councilman Fleetwood stated that the repairs would cost about $10,000.00 but that about one —half million dollars would be needed. Mr. Reed suggested that the Health Department be asked to grant permission to dig a hole: when necessary to dump the overflow sewerage. The Mayor stated that the work has to be done. Mr. Reed stated that the new main should be 10 inches in diameter and that clean terra cotta pipe should be used. Councilman Fleetwood asked if the Town had the necessary equipment could the work be done any cheaper. Mr. Reed stated that it could, the cost would be about $9.00 per foot. Councilman Fleetwood moved that the necessary work be done. Councilman Daniels amended the motion stating it should be referred to the Water & Sewerage Committee with power to act andtthat the work be done at once. Councilman Fleetwood accepted the amendment, Councilman Daniels seconded the motirn which was passed. Superintendent Reed reported that the tractor needs repairs and the cost is $2,201.50 and this should be done at once as the tractor is needed. Councilman Counihan moved that the tractor be repaired, Councilman Hohenstein seconded and the motion passed. Councilman Fleetwood suggested trading it for another. Mr. Reed stated that the general condition of the tractor is all right except it needs repairs and that it would be well to keep it. The Mayor informed Council that Mr. Joseph Hutton suggested using a concrete type of piling of "H" Form Construction for the groins in the area of Center Street. The Mayor recommended that this method be used on one groin and also it would give an idea as to the costa. Councilman Cary moved that three 150 foot groins be constructed in the area of Center Street, Councilman Davis seconded and the motion passed. A letter was read from Mrs. Maary R. Gignilliat protesting against the holes in the sand on Inlet Avenue near the river caused by apparent seepage from the large storm sewer which empties into the river and requested that something be done immediately to correct this condition as it is dangerous. Superintendent Reed was instructed to check on the matter andrreport back. 92 Council was informed that Ben Miller, negro employee of the Town for quite a long time, has been ill, that he has been hospitalized and unable to work. The question was asked should he be paid during his illness? Councilman Counihan moved that he be paid Councilman Fleetwood seconded and the motion passed. Councilman Davis moved that the meeting be adjourned, Councilman Cary seconded and the motion passed. James A. Brown, Mayor
