HomeMy Public PortalAboutLabor Day Proclamation 2014 LABOR DAY PROCLAMATION 2014 WHEREAS, The labor force and union members of the United States are well known throughout the world for leadership in their professions and for performing their work with great distinction, intelligence, diligence, and integrity; and WHEREAS, the State of Illinois and State of Iowa skilled workforce helps attract new businesses and industries and retain established employers, thereby strengthening the current and future economies of Illinois and Iowa; and WHEREAS, our cities, villages and counties are committed to effective workforce development, creating gainful job opportunities for our citizens and providing safe, healthy and productive work environments for employees and employers; and WHEREAS, on Labor Day working families and their unions have the opportunity to celebrate all their accomplishments while reflecting on the values they bring to their workplaces; and WHEREAS, on September 5, 1882 the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated, and Congress passed an act on June 28, 1894 declaring the first Monday of September as the Labor Day Holiday. THEREFORE, be it resolved that we do hereby recognize September 1, 2014 as LABOR DAY in our community and call upon all our citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities that acknowledge the contributions of working Americans and their families.
