Savannah Beach, Georgia
July 6, 1970
A special meeting of Council was held this evening in City Hall
Auditorium at 7:30 P.M. It was attended by Mayor -Elect Michael
J. Counihan and Councilmen -Elect John H. Daniels, Jr., Edward
Jung, Robert F. Cary, George F. Schwarz, Edward W. Towns and
James M. Stettler and was for the purpose of swearing in the
newly elected Board of Councilmen for the ensuing term.
The Meeting, to which the public was invited, was officially
opened by the Mayor, after which the Star Spangled Banner was
sung by the entire assembly. Mr. Douglas Weathers of WTOC -TV,
who acted as Master of Ceremonies, then introduced the Rev.
Lewis W. Strickland of the Trinity Methodist Church, who pro-
nounced the Invocation.
The Election Resolution, confirming the official results of the
Municipal Election held on April 6, 1970, was read by City
Attorney Bart E. Shea.
The Honorable Edwin A. McWhorter, Judge of Superior Court of
Chatham County, then administered the following oath to Mayor -
Elect Counihan:
"I, MICHAEL J. COUNIHAN, do solemly swear that I will
faithfully discharge the duties devolved on me as Mayor
of the City of Savannah Beach, Tybee Island; that I will
faithfully execute and enforce the laws and ordinances
of the City to the best of my ability, skill and knowledge;
that I will support and uphold the Constitution and laws'
of the United States and the Constitution and laws of
the State of Georgia; and that I am not a member of the
Communist ;Paarty and I have no sympathy for the doctriines
of Communism and I will not lend my aid, support, ad-
vice, counsel nor my influence to the Communist Party
nor to the teachings of Communism. SO HELP ME GOD.

Judge McWhorter then administered the following oath to the six
Councilmen - Elect:

Judge McWhorter then congratulated Mayor Counihan and the members
of City Council and wished them every success in their endeavors
during the ensuing term.
Mayor Counihan thanked Judge McWhorter for the interest shown in
coming down to administer the oaths and spoke a few words of thanks
to the citizens of Savannah Beach for the vote of confidence given
to him and his Board by re- electing them for another term.

After introducing many of the distinguished guests and dignitaries
in the audience, Mr. Doug Weathers then read a Resolution honoring
retiring Councilman Dr. C. "Louis Hohenstein.

Mayor Counihan then presented Dr. Hohenstein with a framed copy of
the Resolution.
Doug Weathers then read a Resolution honoring Milledge C. Jones, also
a retiring Councilman.

He was also presented with a framed copy of the Resolution by Mayor
Counihan.

Mayor Counihan then presented both of these retiring Councilmen
with an oil painting of "Tybee Light" done by Mrs. Sally Pierce,
local artist. Dr. Hohenstein and Milledge Jones expressed their
appreciation to the Mayor and Council for this gift.
The Rev. Father Terrance Kernan, Pastor of St. Michael's Catholic
Church, gave the Benediction and God Bless America was sung by
the entire assembly.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned subject
to the call of the Mayor.

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. C. Louis Hohenstein was appointed a
Councilman of the City of Savannah Beach, Georgia on March 23,
1964 to fill the unexpired term of Mr. John A. Peters, Sr.,
assuming office on April 6, 1964, and was overwhelming re-
elected in 1966 and 1968, during which time he performed many
important services for the advancement of the City of Savannah
Beach, all of which have endeared him in the hearts of the
citizens of Savannah Beach, especially the officials of this
Municipality, and
WHEREAS, "Doc " Hohenstein, as he is affectionately
known by his many friends, is a prominent member of the Dental
profession in the City of Savannah and is also an Honorary Life
Member of both the Georgia Dental Association and the American
Dental Association; also, a Past President of both the Savannah
and the Southeastern Dental Society, and
WHEREAS, Louis Hohenstein served his country with great
distinction in World War II; and together with his devoted wife,
Mimi, is an active member of the Temple Mickve Israel. In spite
of these many and varied activities and the time required by his
demanding profession, he still managed to devote many hours per
week to his work as Councilman of Savannah Beach. And his ardent
and sincere efforts in the area of recreation and our public
parks and museum, have resulted in many improvements and much
progress in the City of Savannah Beach.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Mayor and
Councilmen of the City of Savannah Beach, in Council assembled,
that Council express its thanks and grateful appreciation on
behalf of the citizens of this Municipality for his valuable
services and untiring efforts to bring about a better Savannah
Beach. And that it officially recognize the professional ability
and wise guidance with which he filled the office of Savannah
Beach Councilman.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution
be spread upon the Minutes of Council and a copy thereof be
presented to him in sincere appreciation of a job well done and
with the wish that he will be with us as a friend and citizen
for many years to come.
THE WITHIN RESOLUTION is hereby adopted and approved,
this 6th day of July, 1970.

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Milledge C. Jones was elected a member of
Savannah Beach City Council on April 1, 1968, polling 437 votes,
highest of all non - resident property owners running for office
and took the oath of office on July 1, 1968 which office he
served with distinction until he became ineligible to offer for
office due to the change in the Georgia State Election Laws, and
WHEREAS, during his service on Council, Mr. Jones
was able to get the job done and brought about many improvements
in the operation of the City government, particularly in the
Department of Public Works, And, by conscientiously and sincerly
performing his duties as Councilman, he earned the admiration
and esteem of the citizens of Savannah Beach and especially his
fellow Councilmen with whom he served, and
WHEREAS, Milledge Jones and his wife Lilly are active
communicants of the Chapel in the Gardens Presbyterian Church
in Garden City where he now serves as deacon. He has been a
resident of Garden City since 1937 but has also owned a home at
Savannah Beach for almost twenty years. He and his wife have a
lively family consisting of a son , a daughter and seven grand-
children. He is the owner and operator of Jones Equipment Co.
in Garden City, Georgia.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Mayor and Council
of Savannah Beach, in Council assembled, that Council express
its thanks and grateful appreciation for the intense interest
he has always displayed in all areas of community improvement,
thus showing great pride and confidence in the future growth
of the City of Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Georgia.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution
be presented to Milledge C. Jones in sincere appreciation of
his untiring efforts on behalf of our community and with the

Beach for many years to come.
