ORDINANCE No.,3b.
AN ORDINANCE CREATING A POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR THE CITY OF
BEL AlRE; PROVIDING FOR THE DUTIES OF THE MARSHAL-CHIEF OF
POLICE AND POLICEMEN; PROVIDING FOR POWERS TO ARREST AND
PROVIDING FOR HOURS AND SALARY.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF BEL AlRE, KANSAS:
Sectien 1. DEPARTMENT CREATED The police department of the City of
Bel Aire shall consist ef appeinted pelice officers, one of whom shall be the
City Marshal-Chief ef Police and such other necessary members as may be appointed
by the Mayor from time to tim~.
Section 2. DUTIES, CHIEF OF POLICE The City Marshal-Chief of Police
shall have general charge and control of the police department. In the discharge
of his duties, the City Marshal-Chief of Pelice shall be subject to the erders
of the mayor and shall perform such other duties as are prescribed or authorized
by law or ordinance and as may be assigned by the mayor. All other police officers
shall perform the duties and exercise the powers as are prescribed er authorized
by law or ordinance or as may be assigned to them by the City Marshal-Chief of
Police and mayer.
Section 3. DUTIES OF POLICEMEN Police Officers while en duty shall
devote their time and attention to their respective duties according to the
ordinances of the city and the laws of Kansas. It shall be their general duty
at all times to the best of their ability to preserve good order, peace, quiet and
to enforce the city erdinances and the laws of Kansas throughout the city. It
shall be their further duty to arrest all persons found at any time, day or
night, in the act of violating any such ordinance er law, or aiding or abetting
any such violation. They shall make complaint against any and every person so
arrested and shall cause such person to be brought to trial.
Section 4. POWER TO ARREST The City Marshal-Chief of Police and all
policemen shall at all times have power to make or order an arrest with proper
precess in all cases where any such offense shall be commmitted in his presence,
and keep them in the city jailor ether safe place to prevent their escape, until
a trial can be had before the municipal court er other court having jurisdiction
of the offense alleged.
Section 5. HOURS AND SALARY The City Marshal-Chief of Police and
police officers may be full time or part time officers as deemed advisable by
the Governing Body. Salaries of the City Mashal-Chief of Police and police
officers shall be fixed by ordinance.
SECTION 6. This Ordinance shall take effect and be in full force after
its publication in the efficial City newspaper.
