HomeMy Public PortalAboutInventory CleanTybee Jan 2017.docInventory: Who Does What to Keep Tybee Beaches Clean City of Tybee City Manager: Overseas and ensures actions taken by city departments and employees to keep Tybee Beaches clean. Department of Public Works: Conducts routine disposal of trash and recycling receptacles at the beach access and crossover points. Picks up discarded large objects from the beach (discarded broken umbrellas, tents, chairs etc) on daily sweeps. Businesses IGA, Chu’s on Inlet, T.S. Chu’s Department Store: Plastic bag drop off locations (YMCA, City Hall, and TIPD are other non-business locations) North Beach Bar and Grill: Has a campaign to limit the use of straws. Only provides straws to customers on an “ask for” basis. NBBG does not use Styrofoam or plastic bags. A few other restaurants (e.g., Tybee Island Social Club) do not use Styrofoam. Mermaid Cottages is a regular contributor to beach sweeps. Voluntary Groups Fight Dirty Tybee: Tybee Island grass roots anti-litter campaign. Main Street Committee: A few Tybee businesses contribute to beach clean up events (e.g., Mermaid Cottages) Marshtenders: A small group seeking to remove unwanted debris from the coastal marshes through targeted cleanups. This is not a political action group or non-profit. Tybee Beautification Association: Used to organize beach clean up days throughout the year. Not active in 2016. Tybee Clean Beach Volunteers (TCBV): grassroots organization made up of local volunteers who sweep Tybee's beaches free of trash on a regular basis, often weekly. In 2016, conducted 47 sweeps, ranging from 5 to 100+ volunteers each. Recycle or reuse as much recovered debris as possible, and committed to working with the City of Tybee and all organizations that promote a clean and healthy beach environment to find innovative and effective ways to reduce beach trash. Integral part of Tybee's anti-litter campaign, Fight Dirty Tybee.
