HomeMy Public PortalAboutCOTI_PR20140121_ArborDayProclamation.docxPRESS RELEASE: Contact: Tybee Island City Hall For immediate release (912) 786-4573 City of Tybee to celebrate inaugural Arbor Day with new trees Tybee Island, Ga. – (January 14, 2014) City of Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman has proclaimed Saturday, January 25th, as the official 2014 Tybee Island Arbor Day. The date was selected by the Mayor to coincide with tree plantings at River’s End Campground by Savannah Tree Foundation volunteers. The nine native canopy trees join a dozen trees previously planted by the Foundation at the site in 2012 and will complete an allée which leads to Tybee’s large dog park and, when mature, will provide shade for nearby campers. “We are very excited once again to partner with the Savannah Tree Foundation to provide tree canopy for Tybee’s future,” said Mayor Buelterman. “The City of Tybee greatly appreciates STF and all its volunteers for their support of Tybee’s ongoing efforts to beautify our Island.” Arbor Day originated in 1872 in Nebraska and is today celebrated nationally on the last Friday in April. Like many states that celebrate according to regional tree-planting seasons, Georgia’s Arbor Day is the 3rd Friday in February (Feb. 21st this year). “Having the Mayor declare Tybee’s 2014 Arbor Day to coincide with a Savannah Tree Foundation tree-planting event is a unique honor”, says STF executive director Karen Jenkins. “We invite folks to come out and help our members and volunteers celebrate by getting their hands muddy.” If you go: WHAT: City of Tybee Arbor Day WHEN: 9 a.m. to noon volunteer tree-planting WHERE: River's End Campground, 5 Fort Avenue, Tybee Island INFO: www.SavannahTree.com info@SavannahTree.com About Tybee Island, GA.: The City of Tybee Island, Georgia is on the outermost barrier island off the Savannah area coast. As a key defense point to the important Savannah port, Tybee’s Fort Screven, Tybee Post Theater, Fort Pulaski, and the Tybee Island and Cockspur Lighthouses combine with the unique architectures of the island’s raised cottages to form a rich backdrop for history buffs. Attracting a strong artistic community, there are several local supporting art galleries. Keeping the island interesting year round are several arts festivals, the Annual Pirate Fest, the Beach Bum Parade, St Patrick’s Day celebrations, the Hot Rod Run, the Beach Bash, and the Christmas Parade, as well as fireworks displays on Independence and New Year’s Days off the Walter W. Parker Pier and Pavilion. The Marine Science Center cooperates with Georgia’s DNR to protect threatened sea turtle species by searching for nests, protecting their eggs, and making sure hatchlings make it to sea.
