The ceremony, to take place on June 20th, at 7PM, at the Burke Day Public Safety Building, 78 Van Horn, on Tybee Island, will include a flyover by a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from USCG Air Station Savannah. A 29’ USCG Response Boat will also be on display. Coast Guardsmen from each of the six units in Chatham County will be on hand to participate. Mayor Buelterman said, “The Tybee Island Fire and Police Departments have long worked alongside Coast Guard Station Tybee Island in dealing with water emergencies and law enforcement. This last October, the Coast Guard was particularly helpful with re-entry to the Island following Hurricane Matthew. We are actively working to establish a Coast Guard Liaison Officer to assist with the familiarization of community opportunities designated for active duty military which will strengthen the community’s bond with the Coast Guard.” This ceremony kicks off a larger campaign effort to have all of Chatham County officially designated by the Commandant of the Coast Guard and the US Congress as a “Coast Guard Community.” The Coast Guard Community Program is designed to recognize communities nationwide that go above and beyond in their support of the Coast Guard Family. A community earns the designation by making special efforts to acknowledge the professional work of the Coast Guard men and women assigned to its area. A formal application is being compiled the Savannah Navy League, which will include this proclamation. As a key defense point to the important Savannah port, Tybee’s Fort Screven, Tybee Post Theater, Fort Pulaski, and the Tybee Island and Cockspur Lighthouses combine with the unique architectures of the island’s raised cottages to form a rich backdrop for history buffs. Parker Pier and Pavilion. The Marine Science Center cooperates with Georgia’s DNR to protect threatened sea turtle species by searching for nests, protecting their eggs, and making sure hatchlings make it to sea.
