HomeMy Public PortalAbout19740201SCMeeting1 Savannah Beach, Georgia February 1, 1974 A Special Meeting of Savannah Beach City Council was held this evening at 7:30 P.M. for the purpose of considering the duties, qualifications, and employment of municipal officers, and for other purposes. A quorum, consisting of the following councilmen, was present: Edward Jung, Earl Anderson, Edward Towns and Mrs. Karen Losey. Due to the absence of the Mayor, Councilman Edward Jung, Mayor Pro Tem, presided over the meeting. Councilmen Ernest Hosti and Walter Parker were also absent from the meeting. Mayor Pro Tem Edward Jung delayed the opening of the meeting 45 minutes to see if the Mayor and other two councilmen were going to attend the meeting, after which he asked for any business that was to come before the meeting. Councilwoman Mrs. Karen Losey stated that the present work- load of the City of Savannah Beach required a tremendous amount of time and that she felt our present City Attorney, Mr. Fred Clark, did not have sufficient time to devote to these duties and that his resignation should be accepted. She then moved that since no response had been received from Mr. Clark in answer to their request that he resign, that his services be terminated, effective immediately. The motion was seconded by Councilman Earl Anderson. Councilman Jung then called for discussion on the motion. Under discussion, Councilman Earl Anderson stated that he felt it regretable that they had to take this action but felt that, in so doing, the best interest of the camaunity would be served. Councilman: Edward Towns also stated that in the best interest of serving the people of Savannah Beach, another attorney should be secured. There being no further discussion, Mr. Jung then put the question. The motion was unanimously carried. Following the adoption of that motion, Councilwoman Losey suggested that the termination of Mr. Clark's services as City Attorney not be released to the news media until Mr. Clark had time to turn in a written resignation. Councilman Earl Anderson then moved that this news be withheld for at least 24 hours in order to allow Mr. Clark to resign. The motion was seconded by Mrs. Losey and unanimously carried. -2_ Councilwoman Losey stated that, due to pressing business and the upcoming court on Monday night, shouldn't the vacancy be filled immediately? Councilman Towns agreed that the vacancy should be filled immediately and placed the name of Mr. John Wright Jones in nomination. Mrs. Losey then nominated Mr. W. Lance Smith for City Attorney. Councilman Towns moved that the nominations be closed. It was seconded by Councilman Anderson and so ordered. Mayor Pro Tem Jung then requested that all those in favor of Mr. Jones signify by saying "aye". There were no votes for Mr. Jones. He then requested that all of those in favor of Mr. Lance Smith for City Attorney signify by saying "aye ". All of the councilmen voted "aye" and it was declared unanimous and Mr. Jung announced that their selection for City Attorney of Savannah Beach was Mr. W. Lance Smith by unanimous vote. Councilwoman Losey then moved that the tape of this meeting be turned over to Councilman Earl Anderson for safe keeping until they decided to officially release it. This motion was seconc Councilman Towns and unanimously carried. There being no further business, a motion to adjourn was made by Councilman Anderson, seconded by Councilman Towns and unanimously carried; and the meeting was adjourned to the next regu1a.. or special called meeting.
