Review of draft Hillsborough Heights Park Master Plan Trueblood said the Parks and Recreation Board has been interested in including native plants and pollinator plants in the park master plans. Specifically, the Parks and Recreation Board was interested in creating a contemplative area in Hillsborough Heights Park, which might require plants that do well in the shade. Trueblood said the Parks and Recreation Board planned to let the current pl ay equipment age out in five or so years and then replace it with swings, a balanced beam, and climbing structures shaped like beehives. Currently there is a bush in each corner of the park, one tree in the middle of the park and roughly nine trees in the back. The Tree Board recommended: • Callicarpa • Leucothoe • Spice bush Page 2 of 2 • Fothergilla • Clethra • Aquilegia (spring ephemerals) • Phlox • Calycanthus • Flame azalea • Box honeysuckle • Coral honeysuckle • Crossvine (fragrant climbing vines for fence) • Native grasses at entrance 5. Discussion of options for volunteer work days for late winter/early spring • Cates Creek Park — Trueblood reported she believes that the rain garden in Cates Creek Park would be expanded this spring and that one work day could be spent separating existing plants to plant in the extension. There was interest in holding a work day from 9 a.m. to noon or 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 6. Trueblood will reach out to The Little School and Orange County master gardeners for possible volunteers. • Turnip Patch Park — Lewis reported that the Hillsborough Garden Club is working to establish a regular monthly workday (in spring and summer) for Turnip Patch Park. Also, the club would like a picnic table in the park moved out of a mulched bed. Trueblood said she could have the table moved. • Riverwalk — Trueblood said she planned to spruce up plantings at the Calvin Street entrance to the Riverwalk greenway in February. She noted which Tree Board members were interested in helping her. 6. Updates • Hillsborough Garden Club — Lewis reported the club planned to place articles in the News of Orange newspaper every other month on the best plants to attract pollinators. Also, the garden club is working on National Pollinator Week in June. Trueblood suggested attending a meeting of Hillsborough Merchants and Restaurants instead of visiting each business to discuss pollinator week participation. • Bee City initiative — Trueblood asked for PDFs of everything the garden club sent out in 2018 to prepare for the annual Bee City application renewal. • Staff updates — Trueblood reported that: o Some trees had to be removed at the corner of the water plant because of root damage to the building. o Duke Energy is planning to trim trees. A tree is resting on the power lines on West Margaret Lane and will likely be removed. o The North Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking comments on plans to widen a portion of South Churton Street. 8. Adjournment Lewis adjourned the meeting at 10:44 a.m.
