McCarty Street – Boone/Bancroft Room Present were Brown, Brzuchalski, Bushmann, Crabtree, Ferguson, Hall, Hug, Rogers, Schulte, McMillan, Strope, Carroll and Layton. Phil Stiles represented Bill Lockwood Layton reported that she has material from the J. C. Council on the Arts, although several years old, which was a survey of organizations from others cities relating to art and cultural activities. Hall reported the information she obtained from Booneville and Sedalia. Booneville has an organization called "Friends of Historic Booneville". It is an umbrella group financed primarily from memberships and the Kemper Foundation. They own and maintain historic buildings. Sedalia's art organization is called "Liberty Center for the Arts" They own their building, which is the venue for choral groups and the city band. They receive no city money. Hall suggested that we consider attaching our future group to the Parks and Rec. Commission. Brown stated that it would be wise to have the administrator of our Arts Group be a government employee. Jane Smith was absent but submitted a written report on Joplin. That city has an Advisory Art Commission, whose main concern is the regulation of public art and is to become a part of the visitors and convention bureau. There was a general discussion of the availability of both private and public funding for the arts. Hug presented some material showing the availability of federal funds from HUD. Layton is to email this information to the committee. The next meeting will be July 19th, at which time a representative from the Columbia Cultural Arts Commission will make a presentation of what their group does and how it is financed. Also at that meeting Hall will submit a list of all the various arts and cultural organizations in the Jefferson City area. Brzuchalski will report on state regulations that relate to arts and their funding, particularly federal funding. The July meeting will be July 17, 2008
