HomeMy Public PortalAbout20120607minutesMINUTES MEETING OF THE CEMETERY RESOURCES BOARD THURSDAY, JUNE 79 2012 MEMBERS PRESENT: Michael Shellman, Chair Steven Wells Mark Schreiber MEMBERS ABSENT: Kenneth Klamm, Co -Chair STAFF: Janice McMillan, Planning and Protective Services Director David Grellner, Environmental Health Manager Don Beck, Property Inspector ATTENDANCE: 3of3 3 of 3 3of3 2of3 The Cemetery Resource Board met on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. in the Small Conference Room, lower level of the John G. Christy Municipal Building, 320 E. McCarty Street, Jefferson City, Missouri. Chairman Michael Shellman called the meeting to order at 6:20 p.m. Approval of Minutes: Mr. Shellman motioned for approval of the minutes for the March 22, 2012 and April 12, 2012 Cemetery Resource Board Meetings. Mr. Wells seconded. The minutes were approved. Old Business: Chairman Michael Shellman discussed the old business being a review of the cemetery tour from the last meeting. Communications Received: Under agenda item number four, David Grellner announced that the Mayor has received a resignation notice from Mr. John Richey due to his change in work schedule. Janice McMillan explained the procedure of obtaining new members. New Business: a. A presentation was given by Mr. Glover Brown on placing a monument in the Old City Cemetery to recognize and remember individuals who are buried there without grave markers. The monument will be made of granite and individual names will be placed on it. The monument will be donated and set by Capital Monument Company. Discussion occurred between Mr. Brown, Board Members, and City Staff on the location and how many names could be placed on the monument. Also discussion was brought up about using both sides of the stone as well as providing a base for the monument. Don Beck and David Grellner discussed placement of the monument in a couple of areas where trees were, but now are just stumps. These locations were brought up to recognize that the monument would not be placed on an unmarked grave space. City of Jefferson Cemetery Resources Board June 7. 2012 Janice McMillan discussed the possibility of having a four sided monument to allow for enough space for names. Don Beck discussed getting support for the project before setting the stone. Mark Schreiber discussed the State Burial Lot and how we can make this more of a historical place by maybe getting the State more involved. Janice McMillan discussed setting up a foundation to donate money to the cemetery to help with projects. Mark discussed sending a letter to the African American churches as well as other churches to help support the cause. Mark also discussed contacting Lincoln University to get history students involved in the cemetery. b. Steven Wells stated there is a flag pole located in the State Burial Lot and would like to see if a flag could be placed there. Mark Schreiber stated there used to be one there but it kept getting tangled up in a tree located near the pole, but thinks the tree may be gone now. Steven Wells asked whether the corner markers placement could be done in Longview Cemetery by the City Surveying Crew. David Grellner stated that David Bange, Supervisor for the Survey Crew, said he could see this as a possible project for them when time allows. c. Janice McMillan discussed the work project plan and how the Cemetery Board fit into the system. She mentioned that taking pictures of the projects such as the family plots and Clark Mausoleum would help educate the council on funding money towards these projects. Mark Schreiber and Steven Wells discussed cemetery tours that Mark gives and times of the year he gives them. Discussion was also brought up about more information on the City Website about the City Cemeteries and possibly a list of people who are buried there. Don Beck discussed how Eagle Scouts could be used to do projects such as adding row markers in Old City Cemetery. Mark Schreiber discussed using community service workers to help with community service projects such as raking leaves, painting fences, clearing brush etc. Mark would like the projects list to be prioritized. Other Topics and Discussion: The next Cemetery Resource Board Meeting was set for Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. in the Small Conference Room at City Hall.
