Approval of Minutes:
Mr. Shellman motioned for approval of the minutes for the March 22, 2012 and April 12, 2012
Cemetery Resource Board Meetings. Mr. Wells seconded. The minutes were approved.
Old Business:
Chairman Michael Shellman discussed the old business being a review of the cemetery tour
from the last meeting.
Communications Received:
Under agenda item number four, David Grellner announced that the Mayor has received a
resignation notice from Mr. John Richey due to his change in work schedule. Janice McMillan
explained the procedure of obtaining new members.
New Business:
a. A presentation was given by Mr. Glover Brown on placing a monument in the Old City
Cemetery to recognize and remember individuals who are buried there without grave
markers. The monument will be made of granite and individual names will be placed on
it. The monument will be donated and set by Capital Monument Company. Discussion
occurred between Mr. Brown, Board Members, and City Staff on the location and how
many names could be placed on the monument. Also discussion was brought up about
using both sides of the stone as well as providing a base for the monument. Don Beck
and David Grellner discussed placement of the monument in a couple of areas where
trees were, but now are just stumps. These locations were brought up to recognize that
the monument would not be placed on an unmarked grave space.
City of Jefferson Cemetery Resources Board
June 7. 2012
Janice McMillan discussed the possibility of having a four sided monument to allow for
enough space for names. Don Beck discussed getting support for the project before
setting the stone.
Mark Schreiber discussed the State Burial Lot and how we can make this more of a
historical place by maybe getting the State more involved. Janice McMillan discussed
setting up a foundation to donate money to the cemetery to help with projects. Mark
discussed sending a letter to the African American churches as well as other churches to
help support the cause. Mark also discussed contacting Lincoln University to get history
students involved in the cemetery.
b. Steven Wells stated there is a flag pole located in the State Burial Lot and would like to
see if a flag could be placed there. Mark Schreiber stated there used to be one there but
it kept getting tangled up in a tree located near the pole, but thinks the tree may be gone
now.
Steven Wells asked whether the corner markers placement could be done in Longview
Cemetery by the City Surveying Crew. David Grellner stated that David Bange,
Supervisor for the Survey Crew, said he could see this as a possible project for them
when time allows.
c. Janice McMillan discussed the work project plan and how the Cemetery Board fit into the
system. She mentioned that taking pictures of the projects such as the family plots and
Clark Mausoleum would help educate the council on funding money towards these
projects.
Mark Schreiber and Steven Wells discussed cemetery tours that Mark gives and times of
the year he gives them.
Discussion was also brought up about more information on the City Website about the
City Cemeteries and possibly a list of people who are buried there. Don Beck discussed
how Eagle Scouts could be used to do projects such as adding row markers in Old City
Cemetery.
Mark Schreiber discussed using community service workers to help with community
service projects such as raking leaves, painting fences, clearing brush etc. Mark would
like the projects list to be prioritized.
