Meeting of Cemetery Resource Board

The Cemetery Resource Board met on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in the Small
Conference Room, lower level of the John G. Christy Municipal Building, 320 E. McCarty Street,
Jefferson City, Missouri.
Chairman Michael Shellman called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m.
Approval of Minutes:
A motion was made for the approval of the minutes for the December 13, 2012 meeting by
Michael Shellman. Motion to approve was made by Steven Wells and seconded by Mark
Schreiber.
Tyler Woods, guest, introduced himself to members and staff.
Election of Officers for Current Year:
The Cemetery Board approved Michael Shellman as Chair and Steven Wells as Vice -Chair for
the current year.
Old Business:
David Grellner gave an update on JCMO App for City Cemeteries. It was reported that the City
Cemetery information is currently on JCMO App created by Michael Rolling for people to
receive information and location of the City of Jefferson Cemeteries..
David Grellner also announced the City Ordinance raising the fee for purchase of a grave space
in Longview Cemetery from $200.00 to $400.00 and the requirement of new burials requiring a
grave marker in Longview Cemetery had been passed at the December 17, 2012 Council
Meeting.
New Business:
David Grellner discussed information received on the State of Missouri Burial Plot in Woodland
Cemetery. JoAnn Radetic , State Historic Preservationist with the Missouri Department of
Natural Resources stated that the two former governors' graves located in the State of Missouri

Burial Section are eligible for preservation by the Missouri Department of Natural Resource if
Woodland Cemetery was not set up as a perpetual care cemetery. David Grellner researched
with the City Law Department and they could not find information that the Cemetery was set up
as a perpetual cemetery. JoAnn Radetic stated she will talk with her supervisor to see what the
next step would be to looking at maintenance of the former two governors' grave
sites/monuments in Woodland Cemetery.
David Grellner also reported that the cemetery lot reference points had been located by the City
Survey Crew. The reference points in the unused portion of Longview Cemetery had been
buried over the years and the survey crew located them with probes. Mr. Wells extended his
appreciation to the survey crew for a job well done.
Mr. Tyler Woods discussed with the board that there are grants/fundraisers available for the
preservation of cemeteries. Mr. Woods also had questions concerning the cemetery marker
ordinance and whether there was a vault requirement for Longview Cemetery. Discussion was
also talked about concerning City Cemeteries being sold to private firms/organizations for
upkeep.
Mark Schreiber explained how the City got into the Cemetery business.
Other Topics and Issues:
Mark Schreiber asked whether the plan was still in effect to present the Cemetery Board's plan
for restoration to the Mayor and Council because of the City of Jefferson current financial
situation. Janice McMillan stated the plan would still be presented to the Mayor for his review.
The next meeting date was set for April 18, 2013 to meet in the Small Conference Room in City
Hall followed by an onsite tour of the City Cemeteries.
Michael Shellman motioned to adjourn and was seconded by Steven Wells.
