Meeting of Cemetery Resource Board

The Cemetery Resource Board met on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. in the Small
Conference Room, lower level of the John G. Christy Municipal Building, 320 E. McCarty Street,
Jefferson City, Missouri followed by an onsite tour of the City of Jefferson Municipal Cemeteries
(Longview Cemetery, Old City and Woodland Cemetery).
Chairman Michael Shellman called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
Approval of Minutes:
A motion was made for the approval of the minutes for the March 14, 2013 meeting by Mark
Schreiber. Steven Wells seconded and minutes were approved.
Communications Received:
David Grellner announced that Aaron Sewell has resigned from the Cemetery Resource Board.
Old Business:
Steven Wells asked about General James Minor in the City Cemetery and whether he had a
veteran marker. Mark Schreiber stated there is a form to fill out at no cost to provide a stone.
Steven Wells requested we do this. Mr. Schreiber stated he will look into getting the forms.
Mr. Wells also asked about the status of the State of Missouri Governors graves located in
Woodland Cemetery to see if the State of Missouri had provided any more help. David Grellner
stated he had contacted JoAnn Radetic, State Historic Preservationist, and she has not
responded with any more information or help. Mr. Wells also gave the idea about putting the
City Cemetery information on Facebook or Twitter. Mr. Schellman stated they could place
persons of interest on this page.
The discussion of placing a stone for Carrie Crittenden was also discussed.
New Business:
The onsite cemetery tours began with a tour of Longview Cemetery at 204 Scott Station Road.
The Cemetery Board and staff walked the cemetery and had general discussion about various
plots and residents of Longview Cemetery. The graves by the back fence line were discussed
and Mark Schreiber stated they were moved here from Lincoln University. Mark discussed the
McKay Grave history and how it needed to be reset and some of the area cleaned this fall.
General discussion occurred about other individuals' grave stones in the cemetery.
The tour continued to the Woodland/Old City Cemetery on East McCarty Street. The area
where Carrie Crittenden was thought to be buried was looked at. Discussion occurred about the
large white oak tree in Woodland Cemetery and its age. Mr. Schreiber also discussed some of
the grave stones that were leaning may be a liability and should be the first to be reset when

money is available. Discussion also occurred about the mowing contractor to not get close to
the gravestones because a couple have scrape marks on the stone. Mr. Beck and Mr.
Schreiber discussed using brackets to help support some of the fallen grave stones. General
discussion also occurred between board members and staff about individuals buried at these
cemeteries.
Other topics and issues:
The next meeting date was set for Thursday, September 19, 2013 to meet in the Small
Conference Room in City Hall at 6:00 p.m.
