Meeting Called to Order at 5 PM
Members Present: George Bruss

Jane Smith
Steve Schlueter
Chairman briefed committee on purpose of meeting. He had received a letter from
Mayor Landwehr, which contained the following:
• Copy of letter from the Mayor of Norfolk Virginia
• Pamphlet about the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation, with an
announcement of a “Virtual Submarine Race to the North Pole” to
(1) Commemorate the 50th anniversary of the USS Nautilus (SSN 571)
navigation of the north west passage (from the Pacific Ocean to the
Atlantic Ocean) under the polar ice via the North Pole, and
(2) To raise money for the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation
Chairman explained how the race is structured and the rules of the race.
The committee decided to enter the USS Jefferson City (CSSN 759) in the race and to
publicize the fund raiser.
Jane Smith and George Bruss would be interviewed by the newspaper and would do a
radio spot on KWOS
Finance Officer Steve Schlueter noted that a crew visit was not scheduled for this year so
some of the funds budgeted for this year could be used for the event.
Following discussion, a motion was made by Steve Schlueter to “get the USS Jefferson
City underway” with a contribution of $500.00. Ed Irwin seconded the motion. Motion
passed.
Jane Smith suggested Mayor Landwehr be asked to issue a “challenge” letter be sent to
the Mayor of Topeka, Kansas to sponsor the USS Topeka in the race to encourage
friendly Missouri-Kansas rivalry.
Chairman stated he had presented information to the Topeka-Jefferson City Base of
USSVI and had arranged for the information to be presented to the city of Topeka.
Funds collected should be sent to Submarine Committee, City Hall, c/o Steve Schlueter,
and will be sent to the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation as they come in.
Additional meeting will be scheduled as needed during the race.
